I go to my counselor about 2 times a semester to make sure i'm on the right track. She said before i came to FL for vacation that my IGETC was finished for UC and that i'm clear. I don't have to take any winter classes or anything.

Well, now that i'm sitting here in FL, I was looking over my IGETC just to make sure i WAS clear. When i was reading over it, it shows that I need 2 classes for English Comp. On my IGETC it looks like this:

English 101
English 102
Speech 101

okay, so i took English 101 and Speech 101 because that's what she said i should do. Well, now looking back at it, it says CSU only for Speech 101. I'm freaking out right now because I just sent in my SIR for UCSB. Will they make me withdraw my admission because of my stupid counselor? They had to look at my transcript on the application before they accepted me right? So, i am safe right?

Technically, until your final transcript is sent to the UC, it says that you are IGETC Certified, so at the time of the application, they know if you are or not but planning to be, and that’s all. I spoke to my Honor’s Counselor early this week and she told me that the only UC that is very strict on IGETC (as in, the student HAS to have it before being enrolled in their school) is Berkeley. Other UCs don’t hold it as religiously.

That’s weird how you have to take TWO English courses. In my CCC, I had to take English 101 and English 103.

at my CCC, It’s English 101 and then 205. Speech is a CSU requirement- which I am sure you’ve already established. Just thought i’d chime in! good luck!

i haven’t taken english 102 and for some reason, i just noticed that it says CSU only on it…it’s in small print at the bottom of the page…i feel so stupid. but my mom ha said that is should be fine because they take a look at your classes before deciding to accept you or not…i feel a lot better knowing that 1 class won’t screw me over.

My counselor told me to focus on applying to Cal States because I would never have a chance at the UCs with my more than 15 Ws and 3 Fs. More than one counselor said anything above 4 Ws was an automatic rejection. I got accepted to UCI and UCSD with about 8k in grants and UCLA is pending.

Some counselors have no idea what they’re talking about. Many of them are use to students that aren’t that serious about college so you’re better off speaking to an admissions representative at the university you plan to transfer.

As far as your IGETC certification, I don’t know what to tell you. It’s usually English 101 + English 103 or a critical thinking couse. I thought most CC students knew that.

maybe you took another class that fulfilled the requirement. at my school there are a number of different classes that can fulfill the second year of english. and yeah, cc counselors SUCK. mine knew less about UC admission processes than me.

Counselors suck, they hold you back. The first one i saw last spring, when I re-enrolled in school, told me I should aim low and take three years before I consider transferring. In my advise to anyone planning on transferring, do your own research. It’s your future, don’t trust anyone with it.

The counselor at ELAC told me that if you have an F the UCs will average out your grade so the highest grade you can expect is a C. Only USC averages out grades. UCs will replace your F with the most recent grade.

Not all of them are that bad but some really don’t know anything about the admissions process.

To be fair, these counselors mainly deal with students who aren’t motivated, who don’t have a set goal in life, and who view education as a low priority. The walls are thin at one of my community colleges, and while I was waiting before my appointment, I heard the girl ahead of me ask the transfer counselor: “Do you think I should get the textbooks this semester?” It was three weeks into Spring semester. I completely agree that at the very least you need to make sure you go to at least three DIFFERENT counselors. It actually really ****es me off that they think doing the bare minimum is means for congratulations. For me, I think they foster an atmosphere of low expectations. But I’m going off on a tangent.

Basically, the UCs don’t just see that you checked “IGETC certified” and take your word for it. They look at your courseload, and if you were admitted, it means that your courseload met their transfer standards. If you think you need an additional class to fulfill IGETC requirements, call the UC and ask if you should take it over the summer.

^
Yeah, that’s why I don’t get TOO angry. Thankfully, at my CCC, I have an Honor’s counselor who ONLY sees students heading for UCs, and it’s nice. She goes to conferences, talks to the Reps, and that’s probably hard to find at other CCCs. Definitely recommend the three different counselor things tho.
