bump bump bump

what are u asking exactly?

My advisor told me a story recently about a kid who went to Brown 2/3 years ago. Our school guidance counselors (who are, on the whole, very positive) said there was no way he would get in. His parents hired a college counselor who said the same thing. But he started writing his essay six months before he sent in his application. He SLAVED over it. And he ended up with an incredible piece of writing. And he got into Brown.

My teacher ended up calling the Brown rep before decisions got mailed out, she said she remembered that kid and had read the essay and gone directly to the dean of admissions and said 'we have to take this kid.'

That said, this was Brown. And the kid wrote an INCREDIBLE essay. But yes, an essay can 'get you in' by being the deciding factor or 'hook'.

Oh heck yea. My interview and essay got me into MIT (I had decent stats, but not amazing). My Rice essay got me in.

Essays and interview matter. They give substance to an applicant that would otherwise be a simple collection of numbers.

what did the kid write about in his "incredible essay"?

Sephiroth226, Care to give us a glimpse of your stats ?

SAT I - 2150 (760M 670R 710 W (12/12))
SAT II - 800 Math iic, 780 Chem, 610 Hist
AMC 12 - 101.5 (I think, I took it once senior year w/o knowing about it beforehand)
AIME - 6 or 7 (can't remember)
GPA - 89.5
Courseload: 4 AP's and 7 IB with 4 HL and 3 SL by graduation (35/45 on IB)
Rank: 15/458?

etc

Awards: National Constitution Team 4th place (1st in state), UIL awards, Assistant TKD instructor 1st dan, 1st state photoshop restoration, etc.

My GPA is mediocre because my IB school was absurdly difficult. It consisted of 30 students in my class that were from 3 public high schools and were all top 10% or better. 100% passrate every year 5 years now with an average score of 31--the world average is a 75% passrate and texas has an average 67% passrate.

I have more stats, but basically this is a good glimpse.

Sweet. I have a chance then too (Mine's around that - I'm an IB student too)

There's always a chance. Get your stats to around the middle percentile and your personal appeal will do the rest.

i sent along a pretty hott picture for my washu app and got in. just kidding, i actually think it was my teacher recs and essay. however i did send a senior picture to sorta remind them that i'm an actual person instead of just a serial number. my essay was the common app one about an issue u care about a lot and i wrote about how young adults are so apathetic about politics and voting that it concerns me since i consider myself pretty well read politically and i care a lot about what's going on with this country. mmm now that i've reread my essay, it wasn't that great lol. maybe it was the picture that got me in lol.

ooh that's where I went wrong...
I haven't heard from WashU yet.. now I know it's cause I didn't send in the pic....

but I did send a pic to Penn.. and you know they've got to keep their rep for being the social ivy ;) lol
