I think we have her final list

I read this post with small alarm since my daughter is applying EA to Macalester. I don’t see anywhere that Macalester EA is restricted. The website you linked to says: “Early Action is a non-restrictive option for students that are ready to apply to Macalester on November 1. Early Action applicants receive their decision by December 19. Those who apply for need-based financial aid can expect to receive their financial aid result in mid-January.”

You can apply other EA, but not ED. That is the restriction.

FLEXIBILITY
Early Action applicants may apply to other colleges through regular decision and other non-restrictive early action plans. Admitted students can accept the offer of admission on or before the May 1 National Reply Deadline.

This means that you as the parent are able and willing to pay for any of the listed colleges, correct?

What is your daughter’s class rank ?

Overall, the list of targeted schools seems reasonable even though varied.

Macalester’s EA is non-restrictive

Please read the link I provided above. Your statement is incorrect.

You are incorrect. Mac’s EA program is non-restrictive.

You need to supply some evidence. The link I supplied from the college clearly states that it is restrictive. You cannot apply to the EA program if you applied to an ED program somewhere else. That is the definition of a restriction. It is the same restriction that Georgetown has on their EA program.

Read the link you posted to the Mac website. It clearly says that Mac’s EA is non-restrictive. From the page:

EARLY ACTION

Early Action is a non-restrictive option for students that are ready to apply to Macalester on November 1. Early Action applicants receive their decision by December 19. Those who apply for need-based financial aid can expect to receive their financial aid result in mid-January.

Also, as a parent of a child who applied ED to one school and EA to Mac, the process was that Mac asked applicants to update their withdraw status if they were accepted to their ED choice. There was no mention in all of our communication with Macalester that applying ED elsewhere was a problem.

oops

I read the page and I have to say that it could be worded better. It says it’s not restrictive, and you can apply to other non restrictive schools as well as RD, so they are suggesting that you can’t apply to ED or REA, but if they care, they should spell it out
FLEXIBILITY

However, that page does not say that Macalester EA applicants cannot apply ED elsewhere. Saying that Macalester EA applicants can apply elsewhere RD or non-restrictive EA does not necessarily mean that they can apply elsewhere only RD or non-restrictive EA.

But whatever they really mean, they need to word it better.

Yes, I agree. It’s ambiguous.
