I thought i had my mind set....prestige or no prestige?

I am transfering into the University of Wisconsin Green Bay to do a prerequisite program in engineering that transfers (again) into either Madison or Milwaukee. My final destination would be where I have a job in robotics. I had my mind set on madison, because of its prestige, but discarded the idea after the expenses came to mind. Than I had my mind set on Milwaukee until a peer told me her honest opinion of that school was "anyone with a pulse can get into that school." So now i have lost my mind. I want to look as good as i can for any future employer. I want to work in robotics. But what should i do? I figure i have two options:
1) Spend extreme amounts to go to Madison (higher prestige)
2) Spend lower amount to go to Milwaukee (lower prestige)

Do the two really differ in occupational options after graduation?
Will i really learn less in a lower prestige school?

Any advice will be greatly appreciated!
Thank You

I’m not going to lie, I don’t know much about UW-Milwaukee’s engineering program. I do go to one of the other two engineering schools in Milwaukee, and UW-M seems to be at the bottom of the pack, in regards to research and after school opportunities.

And prestige isn’t the big deal… it’s the connections that you make and the opportunities that you get to have that really make the difference. From what I’ve seen/heard/experienced, MSOE and Marquette have better alumni groups, career fairs, and research opportunities. And Madison is even better.

And what exactly are “extreme amounts”?

I am answering this question in a joking but TRUTHFUL way.

You could attend Wisconsin-Green Bay and move out here to the east coast. I say that because out here these DC-area companies are not breaking down all of the various U-Wisconsin campuses. There are folks here from Wisconsin-Stout and people here are asking them about the Big-10. They don’t know much about Madison…they just know “University of Wisconsin”…lol

In my graduating class, around a fourth of the students went to Madison and a fourth went to Milwaukee (slightly inflated numbers, but those give nice fractions). If my class is any indication of the difference between the two student bodies Madison students are definitely smarter (of course there are some exceptions, just speaking to the general case). If the financial strain would not be too great, I would definitely choose Madison. However, we here on the internet can’t determine that for you.

Disclaimer: I might just be opposed to Milwaukee because I went an visited some friends of mine there over spring break and I was amazed by the number of people who “weren’t with the program”. I visited them the first day after I was done with finals (my school is on the quarter system) so I was kind of irritable, possibly affecting my perception of them.

You are exaggerating the price difference between UW Milwaukee and Madison. If you’re in-state, UW Madison is a no brainer

Madison or milwaukee is prestigeous? Don’t waste your parents money and go to crap no school. So many ■■■■■■■ in this forum

Thanks for the help, i think i may still need to do some research on the prices of the schools. Just from teachers and peers, madison was projected as a great school but very pricey. I do feel that the connections you make during school are helpful. I think im going to set my sights on madison. Again, thanks everyone!!!

Except for the guy that doesn’t know how to construct sentences and provide helpful criticism (CSmajor5).

i don’t view either as particularly “prestigious”. i have heard a few good things about madison though…

Madison is a quality engineering school. I would say all of its engineering programs seem to be good to very good based on my experience, though none of them are “elite”, whatever that means.

haha CSmajor5 has got to be someone’s gimmick account

Yeah, we ought to just stop feeding the ■■■■■■.
