Hello,
I need advice or help with UC dealing with duplicate classes.
So in 2012 I took cal 1 and cal 2 in cc and got Bs. And recently i went to a different cc and retook cal 1 and cal 2 and got A and C.
But I realized for UCI TAG 2019, I need to get a minimum grade of B for each major’s required courses (cal 1 and cal 2).
I know that on the UC website it says they will not take the grade after receiving C grade or better. So does that mean i will be eligible for the TAG?
I’m pretty sad as I thought i would be able to get into UCI with tag. Probably will call UCI on Monday but I wanted to hear advice from someone.
Thank you
In theory, you cannot repeat courses with grades that are C or higher. This means the first two grades (in theory) will be counted as the course grades. But – if you are applying to Haas, you need to retake any major required course, which includes calc, if it is over 5 years old. So, as it applies to Haas, the A and C will be factored in and not the earlier grades. Additionally, you can request that repeat courses be accepted even with an earlier C or higher grade if the subject matter is such that you need a refresher (such as math/language) or new material has made the earlier material somewhat obsolete (such as an old CS course). So bottom line, whichever set is chosen, you need to discount one set of units in your unit tally.
GPA-wise cumulatively, there shouldn’t be much impact: 2 Bs = cumulative B; one A and one C = cumulative B, more or less.
RE the UCI TAG rule re a B in each calc course, I don’t know how that will work. No one up here can tell you. You will need to ask them directly.

Thank you for the reply. I will call uci and ask them about it on Monday. I my theoretically I should be able to tag since the later grade will be voided. Is it always better to go there and ask than call?
You could do either. RE: TAG, not necessarily. You don’t know how they’ll interpret it, although having a B in the mix helps, I would assume.
And the other part is, is that the actual TAG rule (B’s in both calcs) or the major requirement? That sounds like a major requirement. TAG, on its own, doesn’t break down class grades like that.
@Ohm888
It’s a major requirement for computer science in uci. I might be able to apply for tag but if i don’t m meet the requirements my TAG will be voided. Does it make a difference if it’s a major requirement? Thank you for your replies. Talking to someone makes me feel better.
Well if it’s a major requirement and you didn’t fulfill the requirement, then the TAG won’t go through and you likely won’t even get in because it’s a major requirement. Major requirements trump everything.
Personally I would TAG elsewhere and not use up your safety with a risky maneuver. Even if someone on the phone says don’t worry, you can’t guarantee that’s what will happen a year from now IMHO. If they say it’s ok be sure to get it in writing via email that the B is the accepted grade. If a TAG does not go through you have no recourse or appeal. It’s a tricky situation that could go either way. Talk to UCI and get answer in writing.
@Ohm888
Oh i see. Thank you for the clarification.
If i go to uci and ask them in person should i ask them to write it down for me? Or perhaps send me an email?
^^^ well I would. But I’m a paranoid person. Just say your mom insisted, lol.
