I totally messed up first semester and I don't know what to do!

Freshmen year 1st and 2nd semester: 3.866
Sophomore year 1st and 2nd semester: 4.18
Junior year 1st semester: 3.33 :( Junior year 2nd semester: 3.9

SAT's: 2000
SAT II: 650 in literature, math 2c, and 630 in bio

Wanted to get into UC's and possibly USC or BC.

Um...if that's on a 4.0 scale you're doing great. If not, upward trend. Colleges love to see an upward trend.

If I get a 4.0+ senior year 1st semester will it help me?

yeah especially if you do interviews you can say that you had a hard time adjusting to the stress of junior year and a harder schedule, but that you worked really hard 2nd semester to fix things. that should at least soften the blow. you did improve a lot which is a very good thing.

Hmmm...what happened, earlier there were just freshman year grades.

What's your story about the Junior year first semester? If you have a good reason for your low GPA, colleges won't care much.

Honestly, I get the impression that senior year grades don't matter much...just don't get low ones because then your admission can be revoked.

I accidentally pushed the enter button lol. Sry about that.

What happened was that I was made captain of my varsity team, my mother went back to work on account of my father's surgery and I had to help take care of my younger brother and sister, and I had a very heavy courseload.

Ok. In an interview or in a personal statement, make it clear that in the first semester you suddenly had to take on many more tasks than before, and as it went on you adjusted (explaining the upward trend).

That should actually help you, I would think, because it shows that you will be able to adjust to more responsibility and will be a successful student in college.

Senior year second semester grades definitely do not matter as long as you pull a 3.0 (or maybe a 3.4/3.5 in a top school). Senior year first semester grades matter a lot.
