yes its out of 1600- im not sure how to calculate u of m gpa but in all three HS years so far i have 6 As and 10 Bs-- in soph/junior year i have 5 As and 6 Bs. (no Cs or Ds) i know thats probably fairly below average for UM but i was wondering what my chances were?

You have a 3.45 Umich GPA which rounds to a 3.5. So yes, you are correct in your assumption that your GPA is below average but that GPA can be higher or lower depending on how well you did in your core classes like math, english, etc...... because they don't count fluff classes like gym, band, how to knit etc...... you can recalculate your GPA with instructions below.

The Office of Undergraduate Admissions for U-M recalculates the grade point averages (GPA) for all applicants. Grades are determined using an unweighted 4.0 scale: A (including plus or minus ) = 4.0, B (including plus or minus) = 3.0, C (including plus or minus) = 2.0, D (including plus or minus) = 1.0, and E or F = 0.0.

Freshmen: No extra (GPA) weight is given to Honors, Accelerated, or Advanced Placement courses; however, the difficulty of a student's curriculum is taken into consideration within the admission's process. Additionally, only academic courses from 10th and 11th grade (Foreign Language, Social Studies, Science, Mathematics, and English) are used to calculate the GPA.

Well your SAT kinda makes up for that low GPA but Umich likes to see how you well you did in your time in h.s. rather than in like 4hrs of testing. That's why admissions does the grading system the way it is, to see if you took classes to challenge yourself and if you did well in the core classes that are a pre-req for admission to the U. Your chances are decent but they increase if you apply early and if you are a URM or in-state.

in state you should be accepted if you apply early

OOS I don't think it'll happen b/c the GPA. Test scores are incredibly high and I'm sure Michigan would be happy to add them into their calculations.

Jake, Michigan only looks at "core" classes from your Sophomore and Junior year. If that remains a solid mic of As and Bs (50/5.0), you have a 3.5 GPA, which along with your tough course selection, 1500+/1600 on the SAT and a 5 the AP Physics exam makes Michigan a safe match for you. Apply ASAP and you have a decent chance.
