I am currently close to completing my pre-reqs for the CS program at University of Washington (Bothell). I have read over what it takes to get admitted into the program, and I would like to get some opinions. I am absolutely great at programming, yet my Calculus 2 is bringing my hopes for admission down. As it stands right now, the best I can hope for is a 2.5 or 2.6 in Calc 2. Honestly, I struggle so much in this class, I study and practice daily for tests and quizzes, yet I still manage to fail some.

Basically, I would like to know how much emphasis on the Calculus is placed on Computer Science in general and whether my low Calc 2 grade lowers my chance.

Calculus is an important class for prerequisites into computer science, just not as important as programming classes. Your chances will be affected if you get a low grade in cal 2, but cal 2 is the hardest out of the whole series. Try your best, the admission will understand.

Math, in generally, is an important class for CS. It’s usually the second most important class in CS (the first being the actual CSE classes). Also what does “I am absolutely great at programming” mean? It’s subjective and if you aren’t in the top tier in your CSE classes or aren’t undertaking any major programming projects, it means nothing. I don’t mean this personally, but you need the grades and activities to back it up. The CS major at UW Seattle is very competitive as it is ranked around 5th in the nation.

Please note that I’m not planning to go to the UW Seattle campus. I already know its very competitive and I dont live near there. I live near the Bothell campus and thats why I plan on attending there. As for the programming, perhaps I exaggerated a little. My programming classes so far have been great (grade wise).
