American Eagle makes cute coats and boots that are less expensive than Ugg and Northface. But I agree with gemstar, unless you've just moved out from living under a rock for the last 18 years, then you can figure out what you want by visiting your local mall.

i see mostly northfaces, ugg boots, skinny jeans tucked in, short peacoats, burberry scarves... the like. that's probably the typical new englander girl prep school look, lol. there are so many cute winter outfits, check out vogue and other winter edition fashion mags -- but summer is approaching so most winter stuff should be out. why don't you wait till you actually get to syracuse and the weather gets chilly to go buy stuff? :) but yea beware: SNOW! so dress warm, haha

Everyone has their own style; who are we to tell you where to shop? You might look great in a sweater from Wal-Mart and awful in jeans from Guess by Marciano. An internet forum like CC might not be the best place to look for advice on how to dress. If you exude confidence easily, it won't matter what you wear.

H&M for a cute winter jacket (they had an adorable bomber jacket last season), and some lightweight cardigans and stuff to wear over tees and camis and under your jacket. Blazers are good too.
Also look into leggings (if that's your style) and skinny jeans to wear with your boots. I think that jeans tucked in neatly over winter boots looks a lot better than jeans over boots.

Forever 21 has really cute, but somewhat cheaply-made stuff. They would be good for zip-up hoodies and maybe some sweaters.

For shoes... I'd just hit up a shoe store (like DSW or MJM or even Payless) or any department store and try on shoes until you find what you like.

Beware of the American Eagle peacoat. I have one, and it is so adorable, but not warm at all. Try to get a jacket in a longish fit.

There's a mall in Syracuse (The Carousel Mall). You can also look up factory outlet stores in the upstate NY area if you don't want to spend too much..

syracuse is typically pretty preppy, so if you followed most of the advice on this board you'd be in good shape. Consider buying stuff now, since there are probably pretty good sales on winter clothing b/c it's the end of the season.

..or you just ignore the cold. That's what we do in Sweden and it gets pretty cold over here. I'm not saying you should walk around in shorts, were jeans and use wool or, if you can afford it, cashmere (cashmere mixes are cheaper but still warm) jumpers. Actually its quite easy to look cute. Wear several layers of clothes. Use big knitted scarves and cute hats, this winter fur hats (fake or non fake, you choose) were really trendy and they make you look really warm and fuzzy. The most difficult part of your outfit will definitely be the shoes. Either you wear really thick socks (like skiing socks) in your favourite shoes, otherwise try fur shoes. Timberland had some cute boots this winter, and then there are the classic bally curling shoes (although I personally think they are too masculine). I often wear skinny jeans since they are easy to tuck into the boots I wear to avoid the snow..
