My school doesn't have one. Or any extra curricular activities other than sports for that matter. And I want to have one here.
I was in a different school last year and introduced the idea to my English teacher who basically ignored me.
I'm in a different school now and I want my school to have a newspaper. I'll start my senior year in a dew days and I can't think of a way to introduce this to the principal.
In the event that it does actually happen, it would take months before it actually gets started and my last year would be over. Once the only person who got the whole thing going is gone..it'll be neglected.
I like to write and I have had an article or two published before.
so, how should I go about it?
:)

Well, you could start out by preparing a letter that would be handed to your principal on your first day of school explaining to him why the school should have a newspaper and how you plan on getting it started. You want him to see you as a diligent worker so however you write the letter reflects on how good of a writer you are, this shouldn't be a problem because you're a good writer:). You might also want to think about starting some other clubs because a school with no extra-curricular activities except for sports must really suck. MAKE HISTORY:)

yup. my school definately sucks. That sounds like a good idea. I was also thinking of talking to one of the English teachers; she seems interested in making the students more involved with the school. She was the one who introduced me to CC.lol
I don't know why, but that "MAKE HISTORY" made me laugh.

No, MAKE PHSYICS. :D

Sorry, bad joke. :p

No, make love, not war.

haha.

Yeah.. and get other people together who would be interested in writing, doing layout, pictures, etc so when you talk to the principal you have a good amount of people interested and it's not just you saying you want it

That's definitely a good idea, but I know what you mean about the neglected thing. That's the bad thing about clubs started by seniors, underclassmen don't understand and let the projects fail.

you got that right. lol :)

um, it'll be tough to get people to participate. But it's worth a try. The school will come up with excuses not to do it. I doubt that the school will agree to it, but I guess I'll never know unless I try, right?

They have no good reason to not do it, don't give up on the idea.

yeah, I can't think of a reason why they shouldn't agree. But this idea, and a few others, were shunned when I introduced them to my old school. So it's really the logical thing to expect. But there is one teacher who is enthusiastic when it comes to this sort of stuff, she might be able to help. She convinced me to enter this writing compition a few months ago.

"The school will come up with excuses not to do it. I doubt that the school will agreet to it, but I guess I'll never know unless I try, right?"

Yep, that's the "go-get-em" spirit. I'm going to be frank with you, the only way to get things that you really want done is to have the right attitude. If you REALLY want the newspaper, you should already be assured in your mind that THERE WILL BE A NEWSPAPER WHETHER THEY LIKE IT OR NOT! With this type of attitude, I can assure you that about 75% of the time, you'll get your way. The first step of achieving a goal is having the right mindset and then executing your actions toward attaining that goal:)

If your school won't do it, try looking at little neighborhood papers, ask about writing something for youth in your area-

at least that way you might get some experience with your icky school

If they do let you do it, have realistic goals- say 4 editions for the year, go small- say 4 pages- ask the english teachers to suggest other students who may want to contribute

When you present your ideas to the principal, have ideas for most of the articles, how it will get printed (it doesn't have to be all fancy at first), how it will be distributed, your deadlines, say, after Halloween or Thanksgiving for the first edition

To get kids to read it, offer a contest in the newspaper- maybe coming up with a name for the publication, etc...

Good luck, and even it it collapses after you leave, at least while you were there, the school had a paper

Oh yeah, with a jock school, if you dedicate a page to sports....yeah

I have noticed that if I persist long enough and don't stop nagging, and I mean that in a good way, I get what I want.
4 or 5 pages is what I was going for. but I'm stumpped when it comes to the number of issues per year; I don't know if it should be weekly or monthly or what.
The school has photocopying machines and stuff, so I don't think printing will be a problem. The real issue is the fact that the school hates to spend money; it's average income a year is a little over 20 million and they don't like to use one penny of it.
I'd hate to see them turn me down, this would be good for the schools reputation. But I hope they are able to see that.

I really want my crappy school to start a newspaper, but chances are nobody's going to listen to me because I'am only a freshman. Do you guys think i should speak out or keep my mouth shut till my senior year and risk embarrising myself?

quick question : Are freshman even allowed to start clubs ?

Definitely don't wait until you're a senior. Unless you have a dedicated and interested staff of froshs, sophs, and juniors, it will crash as soon as you leave. If you build it up as you go through high school it has a better chance of flourishing.

I don't know if freshman are allowed to start clubs at your school. You'll have to ask somebody that's in charge of something.

And therein lies the fallacy; the ignorant mistake implemented by the school system. Age does not determine anything at all; yet they suggest the first year of high school to become acclimatized. They do not realize what one can do , let alone one with determination and even the most limited of intelligence can. Yet they believe a year shall make you wise and intelligent. Perhaps it stems from their own insecurity - yet, only their idiocy halts proper education.
Do not be discouraged; your passion will blossom - given water, the sun, and most importantly the proper soil. A flower cannot live forever within earth.

are u calling me an idiot?

oh, and tom thanx a LOT for your advice. I'll definetly be checking with the guidance department on monday on whether or not I'am allowed to start this "club" or whatever they call it in HS.

craze200: you're welcome. good luck

Chaos: Are you trying to show off? ;) But seriously, that was a long passage to basically say 'do it'.
