If you want to be a magazine critic then you should probably double major in film studies and journalism. I imagine that you would end up with a strong background in critical theory and criticism from this combination. You could also try a double major in psychology and film studies. Psychology is actually quite popular when it comes to aproaches to analyze artistic works like motion pictures. One thing to remember is that you dont really need a specific type of degree to be a film critic but you need to come out THINKING like a person that produces films and trained in a way that allows you to analyze the work in some way. Now if you want to get into academia then you need, like, a Ph.D. If I recall correctly, I dont think colleges look upon you majoring in film studies then going on to study it at the graduate level. Maybe something like anthropology or anything that cultivates an analytical mind and art appreciation.

“…I dont think colleges look upon you majoring in film studies then going on to study it at the graduate level”. “FAvorably”. I meant to say “favorably” before that period. (typed this on a cell phone).

Art History and/or Film Studies, though you really don’t need to be in a program that requires producing films. Some schools also have a Film Theory major.

I agree that you don’t need to major in film production. But the best critics know more than just film and film history/theory. Read the reviews and you will find that a great critic has a lot of information about literature in general (as well as mythology, psychology, general history, etc.). As the simplest example of this, a critic reviewing O Brother, Where Art Thou would look foolish if s/he did not immediately recognize it as a retelling of Homer’s Odyssey, with the cyclops, sirens, and other giveaways.

So perhaps the best path to take would be a deep liberal arts education, combined with a minor in critical film studies.

…my two cents.

Thanks for all the help everybody! :)
