i want to become an engineer?

Right now I am a freshman in community college doing my first semester. I am taking 2 remedial courses, one in math and one in reading. Im also taking business law1 and english comp1. Right now ima business major, but im about to switch it. My plan is to transfer to the U. o Pittsburgh. The only requirements are, calc 1&2, Chem for Eng. 1&2, Physics for eng. 1&2, engineering computing, and 2 social science courses. Also, all students must have a minimum of 2.8GPA. I will be able to complete all these courses within 60 credits. My stepdad works at three mile island and he said he will talk the the engineering manager there to see if i can get a summer internship. So this is my plan to complete all these courses and transfer, but if I can't get into PITT and do get into another less known university will it matter? Also, these courses are going to be hard and my GPA in uncertain, but does GPA matter for engineers? I haven't decided what type of engineering i want to get into specifcally yet. Also, how hard is it to break into engineering? Specifically, someone who has a GED not a diploma? Do i still stand a chance? My goal is atleast a 3.0GPA, ofcourse, im going to to my absolute best.

Right now im taking
Spring 2011 freshman first semester
Intermediate algebra Remedial
Strategic reading 3 remedial
english comp 1
business law 1

however, i just emailed my advisor too see how i can switch my major and make a guideline ot complete all the classes i must complete to transfer. I will have to take some summer courses, but it will be worth it in the end.

Engineer? What kind of engineer? You can’t major in “Engineer”. Sorry to be blunt but if you are taking remedial math stay away from engineering.

im only taking remedial math courses because i dropped out of high school. I’m actually not bad at math. Anyway, are you saying I can’t do it because i have to take remedial courses. No offense but thats ignorant! I even talked to the admissions over at PITT and they said its fine as long as i complete the above mentioned. I was looking at civil engineering specifically environmental, however, im not 100% positive at this point i want to do a little more research on all the types, because im some what interested in chemical or electrical.

I forgot to mention im also pursuing a career as an airline pilot so maybe even aerospace engineering. At this point its whatever is in most demand and pays the most. I just want to be an engineer for the low stress, good pay, and job security. As being an engineer is my backup mostly, but its the career im going to pursue right out of college as i build hours to one day fly for a regional airline. Then major airline.

As far as getting into a school it won’t matter what your Highschool gpa was or that you have a GED if you are transfering. GPA may not be the end all be all of engineering but you don’t want to be the guy with a 2.8 fighting to find a job after you are done with school. That said you need to decide if you are “Not bad” at math or Darn good at math as math is the bread and butter of engineering. Being an engineer generally would not be classified as low stress and if you aren’t the high achiever type job security is not really a phrase that can be used to describe any job in the US.

@JDong92 RE: Engineer? What kind of engineer? You can’t major in “Engineer”. Sorry to be blunt but if you are taking remedial math stay away from engineering.

I don’t agree with this statement as it is. Taking remedial math courses could be attributed to various reasons, but being incapable of becoming a successful engineer is not a circumstance for every individual.

The most popular youtube math guy “PatrickJMT” knows his math very well. He has a Master’s in Math. He had to take remedial math classes when he went to community college because his high school teachers didn’t know how to teach it. So there.

yeah im pretty good at math in high school I always got a B+ or A… i just never finished algebra 2 had i, i’d would have taken AP calc and AP stat my senior year, but i dropped out. Math has always been my best subject.
