So this is my second year (4th semester) into the foreign language class, I also studied abroad in the country during the summer, and plan on finishing the language this semester. But I don't know if I should continue next semester and the year after that. I've lost interest in the school's language program and just sort of feel burdened with all the extra work from this class. Also the director of the language program constantly criticizes us and makes it seem like we're a lost cause. So really what's the point? The thing is I'm an International Studies major, but I've also come to realize that it's not for me, so a lot of these classes I'm taking I just have no interest in and feel like I'm wasting time and money. What should I do? If I drop the language class I sort of feel like I lose my identity since I was ambitious about it last year and that's what everyone knows me for but at the same time I don't want to miss out on things I'm actually interested in because I'm too scared to move on. I want to look into other majors and classes I could find useful for a career I would be interested in and work on that instead of being stuck at where I'm at. Any advice?

If you don’t like it, it’s time for a change. Don’t worry about losing your identity, college is a time to rediscover yourself. If you want to change your major completely, there’s still time to do that since you’re a sophomore. I would possibly shadow people with careers in new fields of interest your’e considering to see whether you could tolerate a job like that.

If you don’t want to do it and it’s not required that you do it, don’t do it. Explore other fields and change majors if that’s what you want to do. Better to switch now when you still have time to get required classes than to switch in a year or two when you may not be able to fit in required classes as easily.

Yeah, do what’s important to you. Granted, it would be cool to maintain use of the language in some other ways, so you can keep the language on your resume. Have you considered interning with the language, to free you up from the class responsibilities, and get you out of the department? Also, feel free to give some input on my thread, I’m trying to figure out foreign language degrees (http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/other-college-majors/1565838-seeking-input-foreign-language-degrees.html)

Also, isn’t 4th semester a minor? It is at my school (if you skip the intro level). Then you would still have your minor, so that would be good.
