I'm going to be a senior and am intersted in Smith but I'm worried that it's to much of a reach for me. I'm 2/235 in a small school in Texas, which doesn't offer many AP or Honor courses and no IB's. My GPA is a 5.5 (weighted) on a 5.0 scale. I have taken mostly AP's and Honors courses and so far 24 hours worth of other courses at a local community college. My EC's are not great...band, National Honor Society, Spanish Honor Society, piano. I have a 1930 on my SAT (590 verbal, 650 math, 690 writing) and a 29 on my ACT. I dont plan on taking any SAT II's. Is there a chance for me at Smith? Especially since I don't have any SAT II's...

I don't think Smith is too much of a reach at all! In fact, it might even be a match.

Your SAT and ACT scores are actually right in keeping with their averages, though they have gotten more selective with the incoming class. SAT II scores are recommended but not required. If you really want to go there, I say take a few that you know you'll do well with.

thankyou very much! does smith really use the SAT II's as a major factor? Like do most people that are accepted have them?

If they're recommending them, the answer to each of those questions is probably "yes." I would really encourage you to take a couple.

I wouldn't worry about the quality of your school...Smith is much more interested in whether you took advantage of everything that was offered than with exactly what AP and IB classes your school had. From your class rank and the fact that you did take APs when you could, it sounds like you made the most of your education. In terms of your test scores, they aren't terrible for Smith but you'd have a better shot of getting in if you did well on one or two SAT IIs or you retook the SAT or ACT.

Write a great essay (have parents and teacher proofread it!) and if possible come to Smith for a visit and interview, or contact the admissions office about having an alumnae interview (this might require you to travel to a nearby city, or there could be an alum living right in your hometown).

Good luck!

thankyou so much!

does smith have early action?

no, but two rounds of early decision

Sr06:

I am in exactly the same boat you are and i am so relieved to see someone like myself on the board who isn't perfect. I have a 1990 on my SATs and 31 on the ACT, and have done extracurriculars in the past but almost done currently. I am horribley introverted and my school offers 2 APs...

Maybe i am overconfident but i believe you can get in. Good luck applying ( in case i never talk to you again on this forum) and hopefully you are accepted.

P.S. I didn't do the SAT II either. I want to but i don't think the scores i would get were worth the time spent learning the subject over again. I am sticking to the interview.

You guys really should be doing the SAT IIs. :/

Shadowfire, your 31 ACT is one point above the middle 50% at Smith. Be sure to submit both your SAT and ACT scores.

Where you're from New York, a state Smith draws a lot of students from, you're going to want to make sure your application really stands out. When they ask about extracurriculars in your interview, "I'm introverted" probably isn't going to cut it. ECs are considered a major admissions factor at Smith, along with class rank, essay, interview, and SAT/ACT scores (it's ranked at the same level!). If you can, try to get more active. :)
