I want to go somewhere besides Rutgers- lemme get some honest opinions please

@DrGoogle yes i looked into Rice for ED, if you get accepted you have to go so that is not an option because I have no idea if my family can or cannot bear the cost so I probably will choose between cornell and duke

You can OP out on all ED decision if you don’t get enough money to go there. This has been discussed at length at CC. You can do that for Cornell also.

Do they offer this for RD too? I don’t think anyone from my school has ever applied to Rice ever. @DrGoogle

Yes the application is free, you can apply RD or ED. My kid decided not to apply period.

@DrGoogle @codemachine yeah i dont think anyone has applied to Rice in the recent years so that might be a plus, but same goes with Duke, we had one applicant who got rejected last year but other than that nobody

The kid from my daughters physics class did apply and got accepted, she also got accepted to Cornell RD. But she now attending Berkeley for EECS. I think it’s hard to lure students like that out of state.

That’s good to know. Duke would be closer to NJ for @pearmetty but you would probably have the best chance at Rice.

@codemachine @DrGoogle do yall know how difficult it is to opt out of contract if they dont give enough aid at ED? because i would love to go to Rice but I dont want to spend an obscene amount of time with Rice Admissions office in order to break the contract

Probably just appeal if you get in and they don’t offer enough.

@DrGoogle Was the free Rice app a special case for your daughter, because their website says its $75? If they feel you provide “geographic diversity”, could any school offer you this?

@code,high stats kids ORM for both my daughter and her AP physics grading partner. Probably top 1% GPA and top 1% SAT. I’m not aware of special unless you it’s female. They both engineering major but at the time they received the free application, Rice didn’t know that. So I think it’s mostly stats.

Pearmetty, read the last post.
But it has been discussed at nauseous regarding ED decision to other schools as well. It was in the parents thread. The trick is to find out the one that lots of parents who are lawyers agreed it was ok if you can’t afford it.

Codemachine, I wrote in a hurry on my iPhone so it was not legible.
No special case, just high stats ORM. Both applied to engineering but I don’t see how Rice could have known that. Since it was before they applied.

I ditto that ^. If you could get a free app from Rice and be able to opt out of ED, while also being able to go to a top engineering school (IMO), you’re set.

@DrGoogle They just randomly sent it to her and her friend without instigating it? This is interesting to me, as I’ve never considered Rice an option until now. Then again, if the application is free, what’s the harm in applying?

Another thread regarding backing out on ED, check out the post by ClassicRockDad.

I suggest that the OP discuss finances with his parents before committing to a binding ED application. What parents think they can afford is often very different from what colleges think parents can afford. I believe that Rice is a wealthy university, with fairly deep pockets, but the OP and his parents should review the NPC beforehand. It is never desirable to apply ED then refuse the college. The college can’t do much against you, but it can hurt your high school in the future. Your counselor has to sign off on the application, and her credibility will be on the line.

@woogzmama tbh if i got accepted and then refused the school (which would be HIGHLY unlikely) it would not affect my school as my school is very noncompetitive for a school of my size. im the first person to apply to Rice in probably 4 years

@codemachine @DrGoogle i seriously need to get that fee waiver that would be great

Email Rice’s admissions office and see if they have requirements. Maybe if you request it you can get it? (Also share withh me as I’d like to know as well). @pearmetty

@codemachine emailing right now hopefully they respond

The link above discusses how one get a fee waiver. But I think my kid took AP Chem senior year but she did get a good score on AP Physics junior year.
