i am a senior and have no portfolio or work for theater design, I’ve been part of my school’s musical for 2 years in a row but as an actor and i also have a class in video production for two years but i don’t know how to create a portfolio for theater design and really want to go for like stage design or lighting design HELP
Perhaps apply as an acting major. Develop a portfolio as a freshman and switch majors.
Many schools do not require declaring a major on application. Where do you plan to apply?
If you are looking at BFA programs, most require a portfolio. That is the issue we are having with my son.
I plan on applying to city tech in NY, purchase , Arizona State, University of Cincinnati and maybe Full Sail
yeah i am and thats the only problem i have
What is city tech? Is it part of CUNY? My son is applying to Purchase, Fredonia and maybe a couple of private schools. ASU appears to be a cut program and, if he’s that far from home, I would never get to see anything he does.
I looked up City Tech and it is part of CUNY. Are you considering the B. Tech in Entertainment Technology?
yeah i kinda wanna go into the concert field like for lighting but there isn’t any degrees for that so I’m going this route
@techmom99 what is your son going to do about the portfolio thing because i don’t know what to do
I am not sure. I have posted and even called one of the schools and they are looking, so they say, more for potential. He is preparing a resume listing the shows he has done and will be getting a really good (hopefully) recommendation from the drama club advisor. He is going to try to get some photos of sets he worked on for some of the productions.
The City Tech program looks interesting and alot more versatile than just theater tech. The only problem is it’s commuter and he sort of wants to go away.
He is also considering the theater tech associates at Nassau Community College (which is a SUNY school), which is also a commuter school.
Neither NCC nor City Tech require portfolios. Purchase told him that they take some transfers and he was thinking that he could get a portfolio together at the other programs.
@techmom99 wow i didn’t know Nassau had that program i live 10 min away from it wow i must check it out !
Do the theater programs you are looking at specifically require portfolios? Happykid’s didn’t. She was just a regular everyday theater major to begin with, and then specialized in lighting with her coursework.
