I want to go to UM

I am a rising sophomore at university of wisconsin. I really really want to transfer to university of michigan ann arbor after my sophomore year for several reasons. However my college gpa is really bad. I had 1.7 the first semester and 2.8 the next and have 2.3 as cumulative gpa. Do I have any chance of transferring if I pull up my gpa to 3.0 by the end of my sophomore year?
Please help me..

Try applying for the winter term instead of the fall. Even better-the spring/summer terms (although I am not sure if they allow transfers to start them). It is certainly easier to get in as a junior, especially a junior who has state residency. I applied as a freshman from NYU with a 3.4ish gpa and a good amount of e.c. (president of my class, lead in musical, joined a singing group and volunteered). And in high school, my stats were ever better. I think it was pretty hard this year just because the UM class of 2014 is way overcrowded so they did not have a lot of spots to begin with…also of the transfers they accept I think something like 25-35% of them are sophomores. I think if you try to get above a 3.7 this semester to bring your cumulative gpa up, you’d have a fair shot. I think they like when applicants show an upward trend in their academics, and i’m sure if you had a good reason why you didn’t do so hot the first semester, that could easily be explained in your application. I was pretty bummed that I did not get into UMICH, but from following the transfer thread pretty closely, I did not see many people get accepted with GPAs below 3.5ish so that seems to be the lucky number.

Wisconsin is a great school, as is michigan so do not be upset if you do not get accepted. In the grand scheme of things, I think a degree from both of those universities will give you pretty similar post-grad outcomes. Also if you are interested in other colleges, you’d have a pretty good shot. I didn’t get into Umich, but I got accepted at Vanderbilt and that is where I’ll be attending in the fall. I think Umich was my first choice for a while and I got pretty hung up on it, but I am so glad I am going to vanderbilt because it will be a lot cheaper (great financial aid that wouldn’t be so hot for an out of state student at michigan) and an amazing/fun school. Best of luck and pm me if you have any questions
