I want to join intermural soccer but...

I've never played before. I play tennis and run, so I'm pretty athletic but I'm not sure if the intermural league will be super-serious and only for people who are good and have experience or if it'll welcome beginners. I guess the only way to really know is ask, but I don't think our fitness center will have any idea, so unless I contact the team captain...? I'm probably overanalyzing this, but it'd suck to show up for the first day and be the only one who doesn't know diddly-squat about soccer.

I played softball since the time I was little, very seriously. I didn’t play in high school becuase my league wasn’t very competitive, so I played club softball, had a private coach and was supposed to be preparing for college softball. I ended up getting burnt out my junior year and haven’t played since, but I decided to play intramural softball just for something to do.

I found that I HATED it. A bunch of idiots who think they are superstars trying to convince everyone else that we NEED to win. Maybe I just got a bad team, but that was my experience with it. And maybe it was just because after being a serious player for so long it was hard for me to play slow pitch goof off softball.

My residence hall formed a team. Aparently they suck lol.

if youre athletic then theres definitely no hurt in at least trying

Yea give it a whirl. If the league is laid back then you’ll probably fit right in, or worst case you’ll just be the guy that sucks so bad its funny, which isn’t a bad thing.

If you’re athletic, soccer should be easy to pick up, since you only get the ball maybe max of 7% of the time. Most of it is just positioning and running.

and in bowling you only hold the ball for 10% of the time. in pool you only make one motion 1% of the time. baseball is probably .02%.

but seriously, give it a shot, competitive and rec soccer are both fun.

Poor advice

Did you not make a team with your friends? You just signed up randomly? Interesting. At my school there was an A league and a B league. Most people played in the B league. There were 4 games, and then a tournament. The tournament was divided based on records during the 4 games, so all the really bad teams got in the same tournament, and all the really good teams got in the same tournament, so you played roughly equal opponents.

lol

Well I don’t think I’ll jump in and instantly be Mia Hamm or anything. Lots of kids have been playing soccer since elementary school but I’m not looking to be super serious about it. I’m just looking for something sort of fun and new to train for in between tennis league matches. But thanks for the advice. At my school, there are a bunch of intermural sports that are organized by the athletic department and anyone can pretty much sign up. Hopefully our team isn’t too laid back or too serious but the only way I’ll know is if I try, I suppose :)

just go for it. I joined the club lax team at my school freshman year, even though I’d never played a second of lax in my life. It was difficult at first, but the girls on the team were really nice and helped me out a lot.

People who are any good at the sports they play usually don’t waste time doing intramurals.

You’d fit right in.
