I've grown fond of the "classics" over the years, like The Beatles, Rolling Stones, the Who, Pink Floyd, etc.

I started listening to the Beatles before who knows when because my Dad was a fanatic, and I grew into some other bands. Then, I went into an acceptable hard rock/metal phase with bands like Guns 'n Roses, Def Leppard, Motley Crue, Poison, etc.

Without shame, I also went through a weird stadium rock/prog rock phase. I couldn't stop listening to Journey and Styx for some reason. Looking back on that, I can't help but laugh.

Now, I'm back where I started, looking for some good music. Most of my friends listen to the "new" music, mostly the "disgusting" alternative/grunge/garage rock that I despised for so many years. However, I feel like I'm finally mature enough musically and emotionally to try some stuff. Also, I can see some 90's and 00's bands who are definitely influenced by bands like Velvet Underground and the Kinks, so I'm open to suggestions.

I've started listening to Weezer, and I think they're pretty good. That should give you all some guidelines to work with.

Oooh, I forgot to mention TV on the Radio. They are, quite simply, amazing. I haven't had the opportunity to see them live, but everyone I know who HAS raves about them. Their music is incredibly innovative, the lyrics are very smart, and .... well, TV on the Radio is just a truly amazing band. I can't believe that I forgot them!!!!

BECK. all of his albums have a completely different feel to them-- his early stuff tends to be a little rougher/weirder (mellow gold or odelay) and his new stuff is a bit more melodic/danceable.
one song from each album so you can get an idea of it:
mellow gold: "loser"
mutations: "tropicalia" or "nobody's fault"
odelay: "where it's at"
midnite vultures: "sexx laws"
sea change: "the golden age"
guero: "que onda guero"
the information: "think i'm in love"

I'm a classic rock fan too, who like you has now decided to branch out into some more modern music. Here are the bands that I've found that I've liked:
