I want to major in Ethology

I tried to do a search for Colleges that have this as a major WITHOUT all of the following:

Veterinary medicine
Agriculture
Biology

So my question is: How can one become an Ethologist? or is there a school out there that allows one to just major in this field?

Side note: Ethology is the study of animal behavior (not to be confused with ethnology, a field of study that compares and contrasts human societies). As a subset of zoology, Ethology specifically studies behavioral processes such as aggression, mating habits or animal communication across a range of unrelated species

My impression is that ethology is a specialized field that is typically studied at the graduate level. However, there are schools that do offer some form of undergraduate study in Animal Behavior, like:

[Bucknell Animal Behavior major

Canisius[/url”>http://www.canisius.edu/biopsych/anbehav/]Canisius Animal Behavior minor

Carroll”>http://www.carrollu.edu/programs/biology/requiredcourses.asp]Carroll University](http://www.bucknell.edu/AnimalBehavior.xml) Biology major with Animal Behavior emphasis

[Hampshire College](Animal Behavior and Cognition | Hampshire College) Animal Behavior and Cognition area of study

[Northern Arizona University](<a href=“Academic Catalog | Northern Arizona University”>Academic Catalog | Northern Arizona University) Biology major with Behavior emphasis

[Southwestern University](http://www.southwestern.edu/departments/animalbehavior/) Animal Behavior major

OP, while there are schools that offer a major or minor in animal behavior, most of these are interdisciplinary programs that draw on coursework from biology and other departments. So, there is no way you can become an ethologist WITHOUT biology. Any worthwhile program is going to require coursework in genetics, evolution, etc.

Besides the programs that other posters have listed, there are multiple pathways to studying ethology. Cornell, for example, includes its ethology courses in the Neurobiology & Behavior subconcentration in its biology program. Most commonly, courses in ethology will be found in departments of ecology & evolution or departments of zoology. Those are relevant fields because they include coursework on different classes of animals including fieldwork. So, for example, courses on ornithology, entomology, etc. would be relevant since a good deal of ethological research has been done with birds or insects. Relevant coursework also is found in Wildlife Biology departments, Anthropology Departments (coursework in primate behavior, human ethology), and Psychology departments (coursework in comparative psychology, animal cognition, experimental & applied behavior analysis, etc. Animal Science departments also might offer relevant coursework including some that offer minors in companion animal science & behavior (relevant if interested, for example, in dog behavior). Then, of course, there are the programs in applied animal behavior, mostly focused on training. You also should check universities in the UK. In New Zealand, the university of Canterbury offers an animal behavior track in their biology concentration.

Apart from careers that one might do with a bachelor’s or master’s degree, e.g., animal training, to become an ethologist would require a PhD in a relevant discipline, e.g., Zoology or Psychology. For example, at U California-Davis, you can do a doctorate in animal behavior, but you would still need to be admitted to a participating department.
