Ok so my school works on a block schedule, which means we have two terms in a year with 4 classes from Aug-Dec and then a new 4 from Jan-May. Last term I realized I didn't have an art class to make me eligible for UCs, but when I got my schedule change my counselors gave me two art classes this term instead of just the one I needed. I want to switch out of my second one but apparently if I've been in a class for more than a week and I switch out, I get a F in it, hence the "drop F". I really don't like my second art class and I'm having a lot of trouble catching up because I wasn't supposed to have two arts in the first place. Am I stuck in it for good for the sake of not having an F on my report card shown to colleges?

P.S. I'm a senior in high school, already applied and waiting for results.

If you can switch into another, just get a note from your counselor that says your school doesn’t have Dropped/Withdrawn Passing vs. Dropped/Withdrawn Failing like most schools do; no matter what grade you have when you drop, they call it a drop F. That should be fine. If you drop it to just taking three, that is a big problem and I might just stick it out.

I think I may have been unclear though; my school DOES have the drop F system. Even though I have an A in the class, since I’ve been in it for over 2 weeks it means I’ll get an F in it. I would be taking another class to replace it, but the problem is I don’t know if I can get out now because I don’t want colleges to see an F on my transcript.

Yeah, you should stay rather than take a drop F. Your school might allow you to take that class as independent study instead. Or you could see if they’ll let you change it to TA for that period if you’d prefer. Tough luck.

Alright I was expecting that answer, just wanted some confirmation. And I might try and TA for the class if I can, that would be a lot better, thanks for the tip Laeven. Also thanks to everyone who replied, this really helped!

I really think you should be able to drop it and the F will be fine because, as you said, you have the drop F system. If “drop pass” was possible at your school, you’d easily have one of those. As long as your report with the F on it indicates that you would have had a drop pass if your school’s dropping policy wasn’t Martianly strange–maybe even include your percentage grade when you dropped it–I don’t think you need to suck it up and keep it.

I found out today that even if I try to TA for the class I will get a drop F because I will technically be dropping the “old” class.

I have a 90% in the class right now, but as you said if I drop it the only thing on my transcript will be an F. I don’t think there’s a place on the transcript that will say that it was because I dropped the class. Are you sure about it being fine to colleges because of my school’s weird system? I’m too scared to try anything right now.

I know it isn’t that bad, the main thing is that there’s another class that I want to take instead (and that I should have been taking if the counselors had not given me an extra art class). It’s our school’s ASB leadership class and it’s supposed to be a two term class but I guess the way things stand right now they’re gonna have to do without me for the rest of the year.

You could do that ASB leadership class as “independent study.” If your school does that. I had to do it for my schools technical credits. You get a pass/fail grade, but you still get to take the class, just not during school (you do all the work outside).

Also, once you get into a college you have to notify them of schedule changes, but if you ask them and explain the situation, then they can approve a drop F and you wont have to worry about being rescinded. You’ll have to check with them, but you may be able to drop it later.
