Maybe this is ridiculous and perhaps even impossible..But I want to teach a class next year at my high school. My friend taught an elective at her alternative school about Asian Culture, and she said it really helped develop public speaking and communication skills.

Do you think that it's something that a non-alternative public school like mine would even consider?

It'll be my senior year, and it could only be a semester course, depending on whatever the school wants.

I don't exactly know what I would teach yet..(I seriously had this thought in the shower this morning!) I have ideas (LGBTQ Studies, or maybe a class focused on starting a charitable project/organization! I have experience with/knowledge of both.)

How should I approach my school, and with what information? Who at my school should I approach?

At a normal public school, this seems highly unlikely, though I don’t know the culture of your school. The main problem I see with it is that you, a student, would be assigning grades, that would show up on a transcript as an elective, and in most public school systems, that would be definitely not allowed. In fact, I would say that the only reason your friend was able to do that was because of the alternative nature of her school; most normal public schools wouldn’t even consider that.

Another choice would be to talk to an after-school program or something for young kids into teaching them in a seminar-style class. Of course, the subject matter wouldn’t be as interesting, but because no grades would be assigned, I see less of an issue with that, and you would still get your chance to develop those interpersonal skills.

Do your own private class. I know my friend teaches an APUSH class (usually for US History Honors kids who didn’t get into APUSH), where 20 kids take lessons from him on the thing. See if you can get that going.

I had to teach my math class in middle school an entire year (it was a small private school and our math teacher was also our music teacher- WHAT THE HECK?!?). AND I had to teach my Web Technologies class once this year when we had a technologically-■■■■■■■■ substitute. It. Sucked. WHY WOULD YOU WILLINGLY SUBJECT YOURSELF TO SUCH TORTURE?!? You don’t even get paid!

Why don’t you just start an after school club and teach something? I’ve done that with writing short stories, and it was actually kinda fun. TEACHING A CLASS SUCKS UNLESS YOU GET PAID!

NOTE: I just taught the material. I never graded anything. Thankfully.
