I just finished my first semester of college and my family want me to transfer to Stony Brook University due to convenience. But I did terribly this semester. My GPA ended up being a 1.9. It was a very tough adjustment to the environment around me, and then depression and anxiety hit me very hard. I don’t know how to tell my parents or what to do. I have scheduled academic probation meetings with the current dean and am worried about my scholarship and financial aid being taken away.
I think I want to stay until fall 2017 to boost up my GPA before attempting to transfer to Baruch or Hunter or SBU. But I already have a difficult time talking to my parents, let alone tell them about my depression/anxiety problems that resulted in such a bad GPA outcome. I need someone to talk to and I have no idea what to do… Also will the schools understand my personal problems?? will they allow assistance or kick me out??
Your situation is very normal. Many many students find the transition into college a challenging one. Avoiding your parents will not solve anything and you should just tackle that talk head on. I understand it will be difficult but they love you and truly do want what is best for you. Your 1.9 GPA will pose a challenging dilemma for you as Stony Brook may wish your GPA to be higher. Are you sure you can pull it up in time for the fall of 2017?
The school will definitely understand and should have procedures published in the course catalog. There is usually a grace period afforded to students to get the grades up. Your scholarship will be at risk. Financial aid is usually only dependent on you being a full time student - not the grades you get. You will of course need to confirm all this directly with the school.
As will all problems in life, the quicker you address them the better. They will not just go away.
Good luck.
