How can I prepare/plan for this? I am still in HS. I want to major in Economics and somehow become trilingual in College. (English, Spanish, and French) (I will have 5 years of Spanish and 2 years of French by the time i graduate HS). I have the option to receive a dual citizenship from Colombia due to the fact my dad is Colombian. Would this help? Would I eventually need to go to grad school? And what would I need to major in at graduate school. I want to work for the Economic and Social Department of the United Nations. Thank you!

You can go in at 2 levels. The basic P1 is ‘just’ a college degree and fluency in English or French. P3 requires grad school and 4 years professional experience. They do have age limits.

Internships for grad students are a possibility. Additional languages are an asset.

You can find the vacancies on the website. This might help you to formulate the skills and experience they look for so you can work towards it during college.

I’d recommend a study abroad year perhaps for your French fluency or 1 semester somewhere Spanish speaking, 1 semester in France or Belgium.

I don’t know if the citizenship/ national selection side of things is affected by residency requirements- might be something to look into.

The most likely spanner in the works would be Colombia requiring military service. You’d be eligible for it as a citizen. So you might want to start learning to polish boots…

My grandfather worked for the FAO maybe 40 years ago. He had a BS in Agronomy only. His ASSISTANT had 3 PhDs. Remember that was 40 years ago. It’s getting competitive.
