I want your opinion! So... where would you go??

Well I'm a CA resident and I think I found some colleges I would really like. My top 4 schools are UCSB, UW-Madison, UMiami, and UCLA(I doubt I will get in here, but you never know).

I think after grants and scholarships the price of these schools could be similar with UW-Madison most likely being the most expensive. I don't mind paying a little extra in loans to attend my dream school though.

So where would you go out of the 4......Then where would you go if you were deciding between UCSB, UW-Madison, and UMiami?

Again I want your opinion. It's great to see what other people around the world think and I possibly can learn more about these schools with your help.

Personally:
1. UCLA
2. UMiami
3. UCSB
4. UW - Madison

Well, it depends on a lot of things. How far away do you want to be from home? If you want to stay close, UCLA and UCSB obviously have an edge. If you want to make sure your parents can't check up on you every weekend, then UW and UMiami become more desirable. Do you like football? UCSB doesn't have a football team. Do you like the beach, the city, or a more rural area? Just start thinking about what's most important to you and find out what offers it to you.

Same as Tony's

UW-Madison

U of Miami
BIG HUGE ENORMOUS GAP

UCLA

UCSB

I wouldn't pay Wisconsin's price when there are numerous other quality colleges in state for you. Also, you said you were looking for a school in a good climate, that's not Wisconsin. It's cold, and I mean COLD in Wisconsin, as they get the arctic air that many other states don't. I remember you saying you're looking for a school that will be as cheap as your in-state school. Wisconsin offered me and many other applicants $400 dollars worth of aid, and that's it. Unless you pick up a small one-time grant from a local alumni group, you're looking at 20K+ in tuition to attend there, and when you have the stats for UCSD, it's not worth it.

USMA (West Point)

USNA (Naval Academy)

The Citadel

Okay thanks for all of your guy's opinions.

It is really hard to decide on ranking these four schools bc they all offer something great.

UCLA seems to be my best fit (they have the big time sports that I really want in a college and top academic programs), but when I visited both UCLA and UCSB I liked the beach atmosphere at UCSB better so I think I would go to UCSB over UCLA. And I probably won't get into UCLA bc my UC gpa is lower than there average bc of the stupid 8 semester cap.....so maybe that will ease my decision if I'm rejected.

Miami sounds like a perfect mix of UCSB beach, laid-back, party atmosphere with UCLA football and school spirit. Miami also has the major I want to do. Media Management - business aspects of the entertainment industry.

Then there is Wisconsin. They have a great undergrad business program, lots of things to do, and strong school spirit in every sport especially football. I don't know how I would deal with the freezing weather, but maybe I'll like it.

I'm also interested in SDSU (great city, weather, they have football, a great social life, and a very good business program......also my safety school) - UCSD (they are a very good school overall and I like the area, but they don't have good sports, or a social scene. They also don't have a business major......not really sure if I would fit in with the atmosphere at this school) - UCI (same negatives as UCSD, but they are supposed to get a business major.....still not sure if I would like attending this school)

There is also Cal Poly and UC Davis, but I'm not sure on these schools either. They just don't feel right to me.

But thanks for all the replies....and keep them coming

Why? Because I prefer the east coast? The question was "where would YOU (as in me) go?". Before that, the title was "I want YOUR opinion!" and therefore the OP was CLEARLY ASKING FOR MY OPINION. Besides, Madison and Miami have finance. UCLA and UCSB don't. My ranking stands.

UW-Madison

U of Miami

UCLA and UCSB

From my school list:
1. NYU (Stern School of Business)
1. McGill (Desautels Faculty of Management)
3. UMich (Ross School of Business)
4. Wesleyan/Colgate

From any school in North America:
1. NYU (Stern School of Business)
1. Penn (Wharton School of Business)
3. McGill (Desautels Faculty of Management)
3. Georgetown (McDonough School of Business)

Futurenyustudent is hardly a troll because he dislikes California.

As for my list...
1. UCLA
2. UMiami
3. UCSB
4. UW - Madison

Besides the fact that UCLA doesn't have the major I want, it's no better than UVa or UMich. Heck, UVa and UMich are better.

I'm just going to say it flat out: I don't hold UCs in high regard. They're overrated. I'll give you three reasons: 1. UCs have no money. (endowment stats: UVa=$160k per capita, U of M=$130k per capita, Berkeley=$40k per capita) 2. The only thing people in CA talk about is UC Berkeley. They seem to put UC Berkeley on a pedestal. Well the architecture sucks, they treat undergrads like crap, the professors treat undergrads like crap, and it's in a stupid area. Not to mention that it's too focused in science (no wonder...Asians outnumber all other ethnic groups there)... 3. It's on the west coast.

So you're saying that because UCLA doesn't have a major that YOU want, it's definitively worse than UVa and UMich? Something seems wrong there.
I also don't think it's helpful at all posting in these boards, when you're as biased as you are. "It's on the west coast" is not a valid reason--plenty of people COME to California for that "negative." "It's in a stupid area" is not only COMPLETELY subjective, but a ridiculous assertion as well.
Sure, you might not be trolling, but your opinions are completely unjustified.

(I also don't think "they don't have my major" is a valid excuse to start hating on UCs. Princeton, for example, doesn't offer a Finance major--most people end up majoring in Econ.)

[/quote]

Who the hell are YOU to tell me that my opinions aren't justified? What the hell gives YOU the right to judge that? Having exactly the major I want is an important factor for me. I'm saying U of M and UVa meet my needs and wants BETTER than UCLA. Period. Case closed.
And because nobody gets into HYPSM, and because I hate MIT, and HYPS don't have finance, I'm not looking into those schools.
Again, the OP asked for OPINIONS. I gave the OP exactly that: MY OPINION. I'll reiterate this until you get it.

I get the right to say that because you have never, from what I've seen, backed up your opinions with any numbers or FACTS.

The way you're taking college is pretty faulty, I think. You really shouldn't go in with such a closed mind :)

you asked this question on another board so cal but apparently this version has taken the interest of somebody from new york who apparently never has been to california and further apparently knows everyone on the planet who ever has uttered the word.

the only school anybody mentions connected with the best state for education in the world is UCB? that view is far more ridiculous than the other stated "reason" of geography.

i guess our new york friend never has heard of places like stanford, UCLA, and UCSD, merely three of the finest universities anywhere between venus and mars. better stay in the "empire" state where i suppose this troll next will say that syracuse or SUNY at wherever trumps them all. LOL.

The 5th most populated state @ UW-Madison is Cali. Add in a 94% freshmen retention rate and I think the kids from Cali end up fitting in just fine, despite the cold air.

Nobody, and I mean NOBODY, has the right to question my opinion because NOBODY knows my opinion better than myself. Get your head out of that hole. Not everyone thinks the same way you do. Have you ever stopped to think that maybe I feel that it's absolutely imperative that a school has finance because that's WHAT I WANT TO MAJOR IN? Have you ever stopped to think that maybe I feel that it's absolutely imperative that I go to college out of state because I simply had enough of California? If you haven't you have ABSOLUTELY NO RIGHT TO QUESTION MY OPINION. I'm a guy you met on a blog online. You don't know me. You don't know the way I think. You don't understand me. Therefore, you have no right to judge what's in MY BEST INTEREST.

Again, as I'll reiterate again and again, U of M and UVa meet my needs BETTER than UCLA or Berkeley can. U of M and UVa are simply CARE more about undergraduates, and as someone who does NOT plan on going to graduate school right after undergrad, I find that important. Plus U of M and UVa are more heavily recruited by investment banks than UCLA is. There, I gave you three reasons why U of M and UVa fit my needs better than UCLA.
1. Firstly, U of M and UVa have finance majors. UCLA only has business economics.
2. U of M and UVa simply CARE more about undergraduates and have more money in their endowment per student than UCLA does. I don't care about the size of the overall endowment. That means zip. If someone has $1bil for 25000 students and someone else has $900 million for 13000 students, who has more money to spend on each student? The former or the latter?
3. UVa and U of M can be considered "feeder schools" to Wall Street. UCLA recruiting from investment banks is lacking in comparison to UVA and Michigan.
I lived in New York for 3 years and I lived in California for 3 years. Frankly speaking, I HATE living in California. Everyone's so conceited and pretentious in my experience.

Best according to who?

WHAT PART OF "U OF M AND UVA MEET MY NEEDS BETTER THAN UCLA" DON'T YOU UNDERSTAND?!?!?!?!!?! I thought people on this board were actually capable of reading, but apparently not. And don't give me the "UCB is the best state school in America" because that's crap.

futurenyustudent, what do you prefer about Stern over Wharton?
