so i know it's pretty ridiculous to even think about doing this... but... if you will.. allow me to pose a hypothetical..

i'll be at UCLA in the fall for philosophy.
HOWEVER, though i've enjoyed the classes i've taken and the reading i've done, i've thought a lot about pursuing something else (though i'm totally ready to accept the likely reality of not being able to switch majors).
in addition to phil, i've also knocked out all of the prereqs for comm studies except the speech / anthro requirement, which i might take this summer, just for the hell of it.

realistically (or even unrealistically..), what are the odds that i'd be able to switch to comm from philosophy?
if i waited a quarter before making the attempt, would it make a difference?

i'm well aware that this type of thing doesn't happen often, but does it at all? especially for such an impacted major?

what would help make my case?

again.. this is hypothetical.. only a passing thought.. just wanted some opinions.

thanks, you phuxin homies.

Either way, you’re going to be unemployed after graduation. I hope you like standing in lines.

It SAYS on the admission packet that you will most likely NOT be allowed to switch majors.

i’ve already decided to go to law school.

@missyujin… yeah… i can read, too. i was trying to get a little deeper insight than a one liner from a pamphlet.

Every line serves a purpose.

Lawyer?!?! There are already too many lawyers. Become a doctor instead. The world needs good doctors. It’s not too late to change your mind.

Wow…did you just try to change ones dream simply by pointing out a shortage in something else? 0_0

I wanted to be a lawyer since I was ten. And there aren’t too many lawyers.

what makes you think i’ll be a good doctor?

(post #1,000 … proof that CC doesn’t stop after admission)

Way too many lawyers. Way too many. Lawyers help people sue other people because of fabricated injuries. Doctors help people feel better. Become a doctor.

for every person taking advantage, there’s another being taken advantage of.
not all people who want to get pursue the law are scum bags.

i mean, i am…
but that’s not to say everyone else is.

There will be absolutely no way that they will let you into mass comm. Its one of the most impacted major in L&S.

It’s one of my life goals to change that stereotype, actually.

communications major is way too impacted to just switch into, i don’t know what your gpa is, but if you have a 4.0 and all the prereqs done you still need to take the courses for the major and then get admitted i believe

there are a lot of lawyers out there now and a lot do not get paid well and a lot of debt after law school, but again if anyone could be a doctor they would

Finding loopholes is not a job. Helping a sick child… that’s a real job. Like missyujin said, choosing to be a lawyer is a childish decision. Just suck it up and take the MCAT, not the LSAT. You’ll be a better person because of it.

philosophy is also not bad for law, i believe it is routinely one of the highest scoring majors in the lsat and mcat and for ucla the courses won’t be impacted and you’ll probably get into the classes you want from what i’ve read from another poster

I never said that.

And I think finding loopholes to help others is rewarding.

For the love of god, stay away from med school!

I need more competition like I need another hole in the head.

he twisted your words, missyujin… cleverly, at that.

when you say that i’ll have to apply to the major once i’m there, what’s that process like? i don’t imagine it’s wholly merit based… would i just have to talk to the head of the department, or something? try to convince them?

ballsaretouching,

not sure if you really mean what you’re saying, or if you’re trying to get a rise out of us, but both lawyers and doctors play necessary roles in society. there are good lawyers and bad lawyers just like there are good doctors and bad doctors (granted the ratios probably don’t exactly match up).

i, for one, have it in mind to be a lawyer.
i’ll be a damn good lawyer.
i’ll contribute to society.
i’ll help people.
F you if you don’t like it.

Yes and no. Of course he twisted my words. But it wasn’t done cleverly at all. My middle-school-aged little brother would have better logic. No wonder ballsaretouching doesn’t like lawyers. ;)

for changing majors you need to fill out a form, and then take it up with the head and all the typical bureaucracy routine. you can try, but don’t expect people to open doors for you when you change into a impacted major. it’s a completely different story when impacted majors change to unimpacted majors
