It’s not going to happen. The Comm Studies dept does not allow you switch into it, but you can try to double major. The requirements are pretty hardcore and there is no guarantee. You have to have 45 completed UCLA units to even apply:

[Admission — Communication Studies](http://commstudies.ucla.edu/resultsadmin)

Pinker, why the sudden shift to comm studies? KC is right, i heard it’s impossible due to how impacted it is.

I dont know how the Philosophy program works but for the Poli Sci one, you can take a slant towards a certain field. This is playing a huge role in my decision since I want to do something with Sports Law/Sports Broadcasting, and having a certain slant towards communications shouldnt hurt. It might be easier to switch to Poli Sci than Comm Studies. How are you doing in the major pre-req department for Poli Sci?

lacking, to say the least.
like i said… comm because i’ve got the prereqs knocked out…

what about a minor?
anyone know if it’s difficult to minor in impacted majors?

nah. but it doesn’t pack quite the same punch, although it’s good for your own knowledge, I guess. Have you though about history? At least take a U.S. Constitutional history class. And a few psych classes would be beneficial as well.

and… Fight Club was the one and only genius thing to come out of that man’s mind. Everything else is just gross for the hell of being gross. I rather read The Da Vinci code than re-read that nasty ass Snuff book. I actually returned it to Barnes and Nobles.

Law schools don’t like communications majors. Why don’t you just take a lot of communications classes? Or choose something else? I’m guessing the likelihood of you switching from philosophy to COMMUNICATIONS AT UCLA, is less than you getting into Berkeley on an appeal.

werd.

thanks for the opinions.
i was really more curious than serious about switching.
those classes just seem fun…
i’m going to talk to a counselor about a minor or something… we’ll see what happens.

Yeah they are fun. They’ve probably been the most fun of my classes at CC. They’re more interactive, the professors are really great teachers and you get to know your class well. I think it’s only been in comm classes where I’ve actually known the names of the people around me.

Pinker-Again, it’s not going to happen. UCLA doesn’t offer a Comm minor. The only real option you have to pursue anything w/ the Comm dept is to attempt to double major. I went to hich school with the undergraduate advisor in the Comm dept, so I have been in touch with her several times about this. It’s really difficult to do.

If you’re planning to go to law school, why not double major or minor in Poli Sci. You only need a few lower division courses. You can even double major in English but there’s a bunch of pre-requisites. Unless you’re planning to do marketing, I would stay away from comm studies. Poli Sci will be more helpful, esp. in your first year in law school.

did you ever change majors? or could you have?

no.
sticking with philosophy.
