Got the email today... I couldn't believe it everyone thought I was going to get in, including me.

I had 640 CR 770 Math 700 Writing SATI. Math Level 1:750 Math Level 2: 760
Spanish:770

I had a 3.92 UW GPA ranked 6 out of 410 students. My weighted was 4.83 4 out of 410 students. I took 3 AP classes last year and was an AP scholar.
I co-founded a chapter of JSA, was the VP of Building with Books (raised $ to send to schools in Africa), VP of NHS, President of Physics Club, Co-captain of Math team, secretary of interact (another volunteer organization).

Also, my parents are first generation immigrants from Argentina, so I am hispanic and my first language and the language spoken at home is Spanish. Neither of my parents have gone to college and I come from a very low-income family.

My essay was about a life altering event in which my father was diagnosed with stomach cancer... I don't know what else I can do....

I had 2 Columbia grads look at my app and a former admissions officer from Dartmouth all who told me they loved it. The former officer said she couldn't picture ANY school turning me down after reading my app (not even considering GPA, etc).

What are my chances of getting in regular?? I'm thinking about applying to other ivies, including Harvard. Input? Chances?? I'm really bummmed...

do not let your deferral from columbia stop you from applying wherever else you want. there have been plenty of instances where someone is rejected from every ivy except harvard; or rejected at columbia but accepted at the harvard, princeton, yale, and stanford. every admission team is different, and you certainly provide a compelling case, so don't get down on yourself

I would definitely apply to other Ivies. I'm pretty sure you will get in at least one, as long as you brush up on your app, reemphasizing your good points and what not. I think your SAT is fine, only your verbal score is low but that's understandable since English isn't your first language. I would think of some ways to make up for this though, showing your grade/exam score in AP English, etc.

I agree with "everyone". I would have pegged you for acceptance. It just goes to show you that admissions is unpredictable. Keep your hopes up and apply to Harvard if that's what you want!

"well to be honest, your sat I scores are subpar... so..."

I was accepted under similar scores. I think what you need to do is find a way to **distinguish yourself as a person/b One suggestion found around CC is to contact your regional representative or and admissions officer and indicate the Columbia is still your top choice. Offer to provide additional information to help them with their decision.

His scores are not at all subpar... He's within Columbia's range by a fair bit; don't be an ass.

To the OP, there is no reason why you wouldn't get into a stellar school, so, if you feel that other Ivies would suit you, apply. I don't see any reason why you wouldn't have a shot at Columbia under RD, you outclass lots of applicants in many areas.

Whoever said that the OP's SAT scores are subpar is an idiot, plain and simple. I'm tired of the kind of trash that some CC people say when they dont know the first thing about college admissions.

Some loser with an ego thinks he can tell anyone with "lower" SAT scores that they're subpar, and hence less unworthy of them to get into that particular school.

Wow.....First of all, youre a URM and your SAT score would easily put you in the top 20 percent in your pool at Columbia. Please, don't listen to any of the trash people tell you on CC.

Just distinguish yourself. Be unique. Dont look like the rest of the applicant pool, which is what many of CC kids do by listening to what others tell them

i'm not sure about 1410 being top 20% of the pool, but it is certainly competitive, again, if columbia deferred you it means they want another look at you... so don't be down cuz of this... and stats def aren't everything, i know people with 2300's that were flat out rejected...

take the advice of the other cc'ers let columbia know it's still your first choice, and try to do something to stand out in the rd pool, best of luck

Honestly, some will accept you and some won't. Apply to some ivies and presitigious schools that you think you'd like. Also, have a couple of safeties you'd love as well on hand. Don't worry - you'll get in somewhere, especially if you play it safe.

Sucks about your deferral, just remember that a lot of people respect you (I do) and hope the best for you. You are obviously motivated and will succeed wherever you go.

Mike9X, at the level you're applying at, the decision is almost entirely whimsical. Of course you are as qualified as any applicant to get into Columbia. They simply have three or four or six times as many qualified applicants as they can accept. You will get into othe great schools, and you will learn that this is the way fate works.

thanks a lot for the support... Sometimes life tosses us disapointments, I'm sure I'll get over this one. Seemed as if Columbia was the best fit for me, but I guess I'll be happy wherever I go. Heck, my parents would be proud of me if i went to a community college :)

good luck, yeah, O.o like many i would pegged you with getting in, don't worry, perhaps they just want to admit you RD for you know, statistical reasons.. ;)

that's a good attitude for handling deferral. I just got deferred and i'm not disappointed since i already knew it was deferral or rejection. However, i feel really weird and don't want to go to columbia at all now. is this normal? i'm even thinking of withdrawing my application.

I sort of have that f*** columbia feeling as well. But if you applied there early you did it for a reason. Definitely don't withdraw your app, that'd be letting your anger get the best of ya. The college you go to doesn't dictate your success, no matter how much you think it does at this juncture. If after really evaluating the school you don't think you'd be a fit or you wouldn't enjoy it then maybe you should withdraw. But again, if you applied ED you must have already put much thought into this...
