I was majorly annoyed today.

And neither is “■■■” in the context of this situation.

hmmmm. . . interesting. . . this reminds me of middle school. I hated middle school. lol :D

^^Yea, but “straight” isn’t a derogatory term. And it’s not being used to represent “stupid” or something bad.

They’re not using it to offend people who are gay though. They aren’t trying to be mean… its just the terminology that we use in today’s time period, and unfortunately something you will have to get used to. I have loads of friends who are gay and personally use those terms all he time. Whenever here around they know that I’m not using it to hurt their feelings.

^ That’s basically how I feel. I think the terms are unprofessional and not terribly becoming, but they don’t really represent hate towards any particular group if they are now part of the language.

■■■■■■: Don’t like it when ppl use this word at all.

Gay/■■■: Don’t really mind it. I even use these.

I don’t know what to say. I can’t stop my automatic reaction, which is anger/disgust…I do think it’s wrong to say…I understand many people aren’t being malicious about it, but I just dislike the tone most people use when employing the word and the connotations behind its usage. When you say “get used to it,” well I am…I mean, I understand that there’s not too much I can do, but I try.

OP sorry to hear you had a bad day. Contrary to what others have posted, actually like in OP situation the term is often used as implying towards what the person think is negative. I hear it at my school and it is always used as a insult and implying towards something viewed as negative. A few times there are students who would say " hey your wordings not cool -or- " etc… there even use to be ads on television of your similar situation.

^AH! It’s not like I had a bad day because of one incident! It was just annoying.

But yes, some people seem to argue that it’s not negative, but in most situation in which I hear it, it overwhelmingly is.

Well most people don’t use it to be insulting. I hear “You’re soooooooo ggeeaaaaaaayyyy” a lot when someone does something wierd.

^But it’s insulting through implication.

But the person who is saying isn’t TRYING to be insulting. It’s just how a lot of us were brought up to say “stupid” or “dumb”. It’s a bad habit, per se. If we were brought up to say “that’s so straight” then, yes, I imagine that’s what most people would do.

I know there is hatred of people who are gay in the world, and I personally have loads of gay friends who I love. (One of them gets constant death threats and has his tires slashed occasionally… it’s very sad) What really makes me angry is when people use the words “■■■■■■” or “gay” with intention to harm. Like sometimes people will send him letters calling him those names with obvious intent to hurt him. Now that is truly annoying.

^Just because it’s not their intention doesn’t mean that the insult (through implications)doesn’t exist (and sometimes it does). So that reasoning doesn’t work for me.

^ How does the insult exist? I don’t understand.

Equating ■■■ (a derogatory term for homosexuals) to stupid is enough of an insult for many people. Even if your original statement did not intend to insult gays.

^Fairy explained it well. I can elaborate if you want.

If you want to push the issue in such situations, that’s your right. But I think intent is the most important thing to consider in such cases.

Yes, it’s not wise to jump on someone just because they use the word. It’s basically part of English slang now and most people don’t mean to insult gays when they use it.

But it’s still a hurtful word nevertheless :/

oh really?
you Poecillia Formasa!!! (asexual fish)
