I was rejected and now I'm crushed...can I appeal?

I had my heart set on going to TAMU. I visited the campus and the Corps and I was positive that it was for me.

I am a transfer student and I am out of state so I could not qualify for the TAP program. I had a 3.4 GPR, 36 credits and I was trying to get into a Technology Management with General Studies as my second choice. I am an Eagle Scout, expressed a desire to join the Corps of Cadets, and took two years of JROTC. I am a white male.

Technology Management was full, so they considered me for General Studies and I was turned down.

Going to A&M means a ton to me. I'm willing to do whatever it takes to get in. I know that if I submit my Spring grades they will reconsider, and I know I need to write a letter of appeal. This Spring I took 10 credits and I believe I have a 4.0, which will up my grade point average.

Does anyone have any advice? I know chances of getting an appeal are kind of slim, so I am looking for every possible other way of getting accepted. I am thinking about applying to TAMU - Galveston and switching to the TAMU campus after a year, but I have an awful lot of credits for that.

Thanks for your reply.

I’m sorry. I totally feel for your disappointment. Definitely send in your Spring grades as that door may still be open. Galveston is definitely a good route to go if you really want to go to A&M as they have a pretty direct route to transfer to A&M. I would have suggested Blinn, too, but you already have so many hours, that might not be an option.

As far as the Corps, you are at a big disadvantage if you come in after your freshman year. If you started in your sophomore or junior year, and you’re not a veteran, you are not looked upon too favorably by your peers in the Corps as you have not had to pay your dues as a fish. My son is just finishing his fish year in the Corps. He has a fellow “fish” buddy in his outfit who is actually in his sophomore year at A&M, but he knew he needed to start from the beginning to gain the respect of the upperclassman. Just something to keep in mind if you get accepted and want to join.

I wish you luck on your continued quest to get in to A&M.

Thanks gxgal7.

As far as entering the Corps after Freshman year, you do realize that there is a transfer squadron (Phantom 18) that deals with this. For a while, they did not have the respect of the rest of the Corps, but I believe they have proven themselves, at least that is the impression I got when I visited the campus. I would be planning to attend TAMU as a Sophomore, by the way. aggiecorps.org;

Do I have too many credits to use the Galveston route?

That is good to know. They didn’t have a squadron like that in my Aggie days.

Texas A&M at Galveston is a 4 year school, so you would be fine there with the amount of hours you have. You can also join the Corps unit there that is specifically for transferring to the the Corps of Cadets at the main campus after a year at Galveston. I’m sure you are probably aware of that as well.

I just remember Col. Hall, the Corps Staff recruiting officer, telling a group of us parents at an information meeting that, if you meet the minimum requirements, and you really want to go to A&M, there is a way to get there. It just may have to be through the roundabout methods such as Blinn and Galveston.

Where there’s a will, there’s a way. Don’t give up your dream if A&M is really where you want to be!

My husband came into corps as a sophomore back in 1977… by his senior year, he was just like everyone else. His sophomore year was pretty rough though.

Yes, the transfer squadron is relatively new.

I am not aware of a unit at Galveston that is for transferring to the Corps at College Station? I thought they only had NROTC there. I should gather more information on this.

MaleToTheCore, here is the link about the special unit at Galveston and how you can transfer to A&M and the Corps of Cadets from there.

Excellent, this looks like it could be a great back up plan! I also realized that Galveston is still accepting applications for this fall.
