I was rejectted from almost everything(besides safeties), what did I do wrong?

Rejected from northeastern,
rejected from CMU,
rejected from SUNY binghamton,
rejected from NYU stern,
rejected from colgate,
rejected from columbia(this was just a reach, expected),
waitlisted to fordham,
and even waitlisted to drexel.
(all for business except colgate for psych)
The only schools I was accepted to are SUNY Stony Brook, St. John's, and CUNY Baruch, all of which were supposed to be safeties.
Even binghamton, which I thought of as the best option of my safety schools, actually ended up rejecting me.
I don't have the BEST stats but I thought they were at least good enough for drexel, fordham, binghamton and at least a couple of the others!

I have a 90/100 gpa (top 25% I believe) and a 2070 SAT score.
I have about 200 hours of community service through key club, was in science research for 3 years, fbla for senior year, and had really pretty good recommendations from teachers that I've known for multiple years.
I've taken AP biology, psychology(5), language(5), literature, and ab calculus.

Does anyone know what it is that I did wrong?
I really did not see this situation coming. Were my schools more of reaches than I thought? Are my grades a lot worse than I realize?

Also, being that I considered binghamton a safety, I am so tempted to call or email them just to ask why I didn't get in, or to be put on the waiting list or reconsidered or something because I just don't understand at all why I was rejected.

Nice stats. Ancient history. Forget about it and move on!

SUNY Stony Brook, St. John’s, and CUNY Baruch, all decent schools with limitless potential. Only one of them gets you. The others lose out!

Nice job!

umm…really high SAT score compared to mine…but I got in northeastern…except that I’m going abroad for my first semester…so I’m kinda like spring admitted…

wish you luck! : )

What is your cr/m SAT score?

I’m sorry to hear that you didn’t get into the colleges you wanted. But there’s no point in dwelling in the past.

Choose the school that’s right for you! And good luck! :)

I imagine GPA was the weak point (not that it’s bad). Competition is fierce. Did you take your high school’s most challenging courses? Who knows about essays and recommendations? Be glad you had safeties. That’s what they’re for. And be glad your safeties are good schools. Once you set about deciding which school to attend, the sting will fade. And once you start compiling a college record, no one will be interested in either you high school record or which schools you applied to.

Your bruised ego and emotion are talking right now. Contact Binghamton? Really? That’s petty, to be blunt.

On Sept 1, almost nothing on the list of accomplishments you’ve just posted (your GPA, your classes, your clubs, your scores) will mean a single thing to you. Nor will the schools you’ve turned down or the schools that turned you down.

Move on. You appear to have a great future ahead of you. Count your blessings.

critical reading: 720
math: 710

I know I should accept it and move on but it’s easier said than done. I just don’t get what I did wrong when people I know with lower stats got into the same schools :/

and now I don’t have any idea where to choose because I wasn’t expecting to have such few options.
baruch specializes in business but cunys do not have the best reputation, stony brook has a better reputation but I can’t seem to find any ranks or reviews on it’s business program, and st johns gave me a good scholarship but is only known for sports.
it seems like I don’t have any good option.
any advice on what school to choose?
which gives me the best shot at a top business school if I do well?

Maybe your essays?
You could always transfer later.

Sorry your disappointed. Sounds like you should probably do a little more homework on the options you have. Baruch is a better than decent business school…USNWR ranked in the NE region. Stony is solid and St Johns is known for quite a bit more than its sports teams.

OP --

First of all – and I mean this – Congratulations.

Looking at your list, I think it was a bit ambitious, meaning that there were more reaches and fewer matches that I would have thought optimal. But I’ve seen much worse. It wouldn’t have taken much luck for you to have been admitted to a couple of the schools you applied to.

However – where you were incredibly smart was in your cholce of safety schools. You nailed this. You chose schools that have a good reputation, can provide a quality education and … most importantly … which accepted you.

I understand that no one wants to go to a safety school, and that its disappointing when it occurs. However, going into the process everyone knows that it is a possibility. If you read a number of the threads in this forum over the past few days, you’ll see that a number of students weren’t as wise as you in providing for a ‘plan B’.

Good luck with clearing the waitlist at either Fordham or Drexel. But if it doesn’t happen, you’ll be fine.

Was money possibly an issue? I know a lot of schools say they are need blind, but I have a sneaking suspicion that someone willing to pay the full 60 grand somehow is a bit more alluring than someone applying for assistance.

Binghamton was definitely not a safety and contacting admissions would be really silly. This past year, their average SAT was 1305 (an all time high) and GPA was 94. You didn’t post your CR+M scores but with your 2070 it sounds like it was really not higher than the average. Plus, your extracurriculars are very standard for them. All together, this did not make for a very good safety. I’m sorry you feel unhappy with your results but you have some great options. Forget about the rejections and feel the excitement about going to college in just a few months :)

Yeah idk if my essays were the best. Writing has never been my strong suit…

JoBenny: I know baruch is the best of the cunys but if I knew I was gonna end up there I would’ve at least applied to macaulay. Stony is a really good school but mainly for sciences, not for business. I can’t find any info on St. John’s business. I guess I’ll spend the next few week finding pros and cons and decide from there.

zephyr15: thank you! I guess I knew that not being in the top 10% lowered my chances but I thought I’d at least have gotten into a few of them… luckily our school makes us apply to at least 1 cuny and 1 suny or I would be screwed. I think now that I’ve accepted that I’m going to one of my safeties, I’m not /as/ upset about it.

Dadof3 : maybe… I did apply for financial aid but I didn’t think it would make that much of a difference… :

rebeccar: I did, cr+m was 1430 writing was 640. I guess I overestimated my chances because just about everyone at my school got in last year, but this year you’re right, a lot of people I know didn’t get in, either.

Wow i’m surprised you got rejected from Binghamton with a 1430 SAT. Stony brook is a great option though. 90 GPA is a bit weak but your SAT is far higher than the median.

I don’t understand your results either. Can you get your GC to contact SUNY Bing on your behalf? (S)he has a better chance of getting a truthful answer than you do.

At what point in the admissions cycle did you apply? With rolling admissions schools, that matters.

Baruch College’s Zicklin School of Business is one of the highest ranked business schools in the nation. It’s a great option. Being in the City gives you much better odds of getting great internships too. Nobody is going to look at your transcript and say “oh, he went to CUNY and it doesn’t have the best rep.” Instead, employers will say “oh, this guy has good grades from Zicklin and recs from a lot of solid internships, lets call him/her in for an interview.”

Very few colleges have the breadth of programs in biz that Zicklin does. See http://zicklin.baruch.cuny.edu/programs/undergrad Go live and in person and see what you can find out about the honors program.

Yo- I got rejected from nearly every school I applied to. I honestly have an incredible resume. I am convinced that the sole reason I was rejected was that I’m a middle class whitey.

In a nutshell:
2390 SAT
eight AP scores of 5
4.0 unweighted GPA
Tri-varsity athlete all throughout high school
Congressional gold award, 3 Gold Presidential Volunteer Service Awards, Mayor Awards, etc.
Over 500 hours volunteer service
Like a million extra curricular activities (writer and editor of several publications, service clubs. lots of leadership with organizing events. initiated annual service events at my school)
5 different biological research internships at Ivy League institutions and private laboratories
authored 3 publications in scientific journals
Girl Scout Gold Award
Independent biological research internship in a foreign country
Private Pilot’s License
Play two musical instruments and a involved in school music groups
Phenomenal *** essays that took me months to perfect
National art and writing awards

I am so ***ed off. Anybody have any idea why the I was rejected. I’ve done nothing but work my butt off since 5th grade.

@catherine33, You may have noticed that a lot of middle class white students get into great colleges. Maybe you didn’t have a balanced list of schools? Or maybe your attitude came through in applications?

^^Catherine33 is a ■■■■■. You guys on CC need to learn to recognize the symptoms. The whole racial thing is a tip-off right away.
