I vote for the ■■■■■ part.

Hey, I’m in the same boat kinda.
I applied to 20 schools, all rejected (save for 2 relatively “easy” schools - waitlisted at Trinity College and Bates College).
4 of them were Ivies, so I expected to get rejected from those. I had about 8 schools that I deemed I had a very good chance to be admitted at.

I spent a lot of time trying to come up with reasons why my results were so disastrous (maybe because I applied as an international with high financial need?). Honestly, I am extremely perplexed.

Cat, if your story is true… Which schools did you apply to?

Going back to the OP’s app, I think class rank and GPA killed the app. Using Bing as an example, 57% of accepted students were in the top 10%. The OP was top 25% with a 90 average (grade inflation).

I have no way of knowing if Catherine is a ■■■■■ or not. If her accomplishments are real, they seem to be super human to me. Put me in the skepttical camp as well. Putting her aside, based on the statistics published by the schools and what I have read here on CC, there are literally thousands of great kids who did not get in. Mathematically a lot cannot get in to their desired schools. So the issue is not really why they were rejected. There are too many qualified kids to fill the slots. The issue is that there are many kids who get in whose applications are clearly inferior to hers (or other applicant). She did not get rejected because of who she is; many kids like her got in. But other kids got in because they had some type of leg up in the application process that was not based on academics. If you work the numbers of the admits and their scores that is in fact reality. I personally know of many cases of kids who did not deserve admission, so please do not make any untowards accusations of my motives. It is human nature in large institutions to take advantage of situations like this. Members of admissions committees are no different. Until there are transparent admissions policies, and more data is posted on who got in and why, this will continue to be an issue.

Thanks for all the information!
So do you think it’s worth a shot to call binghamton? Would this actually give me a chance of changing my admissions decision or getting put on to the waitlist?

Realize the original post was a year ago, but wanted to add my two cents…

Don’t beat yourself up - there could have been others who were accepted with slightly higher GPA’s and SAT scores or more extra-curriculars and better recommendations, etc. OR you may have had a lousy essay (probably not the case). It is difficult to know why someone with a lower GPA/SAT may get a spot over someone else, but it can happen. Some universities also want to factor diversity into their enrolment, such as ethnic background, international students, transfer students, etc. which may necessarily have accepted on the same criteria as regular students.

Hope you found somewhere else that is the perfect fit!

Please check the OPs posting history, they haven’t been active on CC for over a year. Please use old threads for information only, don’t post and resurrect them.
