jordo: you are going to tufts, don’t worry about it. the only thing id consider doing is retaking the sat for 700+ on math

Mike:- your rank, EC’s, awards, and URM status will work wonders for you

  • your last big obstacle are those SAT’s, but fortunately, since they are low, you have a lot of room to improve and have your scores skyrocket
  • start doing timed 25 minute practice essays, I find that they don’t really care how you write, as long as you put together a logical 5 paragraph essay. For the SAT, generic is good.
  • again time yourself on some practice math sections, get very well acquainted with your calculator, and make sure you review every question you get wrong and learn unfamiliar concepts
  • for cr, just read, a lot, all the time, and make lists of unfamiliar vocab words and their definitions as you read

best of luck

ateneo:
your three biggest obstacles are below average (for brown applicants) subject test and sat scores, requiring financial aid, and most of all, being international. your ec’s are fantastic, but they wont compensate for the three issues i just mentioned. i say this with the best of intentions, you will almost definitely not get into Brown. the great news is, there are thousands of awesome schools in this country, many of which are as academically prestigious as brown while being less competitive for admissions. good luck

fliang: you are satisfactory on all fronts, putting you in that zone where it really just comes down to a coin flip. there are hundreds upon hundreds of applicants to amherst who are just like you, and it will come down to what sort of mood the adcoms are in. make sure you write a nice explanatory letter where you explain what happened your soph year and profusely apologize and show remorse, and get your recommenders to vouch for your moral character. best of luck

SCHOOL: University of Chicago
STATE: NY
SAT/ACT: (1960/2400) and (1330/1600)
SAT 2: 800 US history, 670 Chem, 610 Math II

RANK: 14/684 (includes Jr. year)
3 BIGGEST EC’S: Been in Band-made mix tapes and CDs and did a lot of gigs, President of DECA, 200+ community service hours
3 BIGGEST AWARDS: DECA regional marketing winner, Enviormental sypomsium 2nd place, Lifesmart state finalist
ANY HOOK: First generation to attend college.

SCHOOL: UPenn
STATE: PA (Central)
SAT/ACT: 2050 (700 CR, 690 M, 600 W) Planning on retaking 2100+
SAT 2: Will take Math 1 and US History
GPA: 4.0
RANK: 1 or 2 (tight race for Val :P)
3 BIGGEST EC’S: Band (Section Leader), Swimming (Captain), Cross Country (Captain)
3 BIGGEST AWARDS: Region Band (probaly states this year), Region Choir, 4 Varisty letters in 3 sports
ANY HOOK: School never sends kids to Ivy’s, Central PA (as opposed to Philly)

Cacciato: UChicago is a pretty big reach for you, but there are somethings you can do to improve your odds:

  • retake that SAT, if you get 5-6 more answers correct on CR and Math (the 2 sections UChicago really focuses on), you could probably get up to a that 1500, which is much safer, at least 1400 for now
  • get your unweighted GPA into the A- zone with hard work this coming semester
  • you keep referencing some sort of damage your junior year did, if it was serious, consider writing a letter of explanation in which you describe the circumstances and assure adcoms that it was an isolated incident
  • first gen, awards, and ec’s are all solid, consider submitting an arts supplement of some of your recordings if they are truly stellar
  • make sure you write great essays (this years topic lends itself well to that), show who you really are, and write in your own voice- not what you think they want to hear. it sounds much better that way and they love sincerity

best of luck

shultzie: - there is not much more you can do other than get some solid volunteer work in if you have not already, and get that SAT up as high as possible- especially your writing section. upenn accepts 45.1% of valedectorians and 34.0% of salutatorians who apply, so if you show them that your scores suit your rank, I think you can have great chances

SCHOOL: Cornell University
STATE: NY
SAT/ACT: 1970 M760 CR600 W610 / ACT W27 M35 R35 S29 Retaking both in Oct

I know my SAT/ACT aren’t up to par so if you can tell me what I would need to give me a fighting chance, tell me :D

oh I really worded that bad lol. My jr year was my best year. I got a 96 overall GPA that year but my current GPA from my school isn’t updated so my GPA (soph and fresh years) was 89.75 UW. When they update it I expect it to be a little higher.

BTW thanks a ton!!

needtogetin:

  • read a lot over the next few months and make lists of unfamiliar vocab, taking special notice of what correct grammar and syntax look like, will help for CR and Writing
  • practice essays, at least once a week, 25 minutes of your time, don’t go for anything elaborate, they like simple 5 paragraph, intro with thesis –> 3 body paragraphs supporting said thesis –> conclusion
  • maybe even consider bagging the SAT altogether, a 32 ACT is dece, but using the aforementioned practice methods and get it up to a 34-35
-maybe submit a violin recording for arts supplement (with old people cheering in the background)
-hooks awards gpa and ec’s are all solid, with a bit of effort I think you can get into cornell

phewwwww. Thanks a lot elytron. I think I’m still gonna go with both, and I don’t think I’m good enough to do a violin recording, although I might do a senior concerto for my senior spring concert
