I will (mostly likely) be attending Smith next year, and I had some questions...

1)What is the English major like? Specifically the creative writing concentration?
2)What are the girls like?
3) I get mixed answers on this one. Obviously this isn't the most important aspect of the college experience, but how is dating at Smith? There are a bunch of co-ed schools twenty minutes away, and I'm assuming that it's like anywhere else--you put yourself out there, you'll meet someone. Is that true for Smith, in terms of meeting guys?

You will get better and faster responses at the Top Liberal Arts colleges \ Smith page. Re-post there. Most of your questions were already answered there. Check it out.

1.) English major is tough but pretty cool. There are a gazillion awesome classes from a class about vampires, to the Bible as Literature, to just about anything you want. I’ve heard the creative writing concentration is so-so, but you can make the most of it.

2.) Smith WOMEN (sorry) are absolutely incredible. They are smart, quirky, funny, and are some of my best friends in the world. People are super diverse, so I won’t generalize

3.) Dating is ok. Most girls either a)come with boyfriends or b) are gay/date women while at Smith. Some people a—>b. I’m not saying you cannot meet boys, but you will have to make the effort. Most guys at Smith parties are either skeezy or somebody’s boyfriend. I know a few girls who go to UMass regularly, and while none of them have met any guys to date, they’ve definitely met guys to be friends with.
Also, I’ll just be super honest-the odds are stacked way against you. If you include UMass guys, yes you can meet guys, but just Hampshire and Amherst makes things harder. With ~2600 Smith girls, ~2000 Moho girls, ~960 Hampshire girls, and ~800 Amherst girls, and only ~800 Amherst boys and ~600 Hampshire boys, there are 6000 girls for 1400 boys.

Most of my friends at Smith are either 1) dating women so their dating life is fantastic or 2) focusing on their studies and not boys right now. It’s just not worht the effort

Kyle, the English major at Smith is awesome. My daughter’s a sophomore and she declared this spring and she absolutely loves it. Terrific profs and engaged students and all kinds of really rich, meaty courses. For creative writing, there are some courses which I understand are quite excellent.
