i wish they'd change the name...

People from the coasts tend not to know as much about it, though it's starting to change. I live in Illinois, and everyone here knows about it. It's considered the "Harvard of the Midwest." The name is getting more familiar though certainly not on an international basis yet.

U Chicago is the "Harvard of the Midwest"

Haha sorry to get off topic but the last two posts reminded me of an excerpt from the blog, "Stuff White People Like. #98: The Ivy League"

"White people also like to call their school “The Harvard of the <insert region="" or="" conference="">”. Do not challenge this, it will ruin their confidence."</insert>

I know Howard calls itself the black Harvard.

I wonder if it'd be any different if we called it like the Yale or the Cornell of the Midwest. Just wouldn't have the same "prestige" or whatever.

I've heard both UChicago and WashU called that particular nickname, but I think it's a bit stupid. They're all incredibly good colleges, but with very very different experiences.

Well, there are many "Harvard of the Midwest".
Michigan, Northwestern, UChicago, and WashU are often called Harvard of the Midwest.

YouTube - theU.com - Wash. U St. Louis: "Intro"

On the cab back from the airport, when I was directing the guy to my apartment, I said it was near WashU. He knew where to go, but started asking me a couple of questions. Among them were about where our satellite campuses are. I had to explain to him that he'd mistake us for the University of Washington.

A friend of mine at WashU told me at WILD a couple years ago one of the performers told the audience: "It's great to be here at Washington State!"

Harvard is the Wash U of the East Coast!

Be proud of the school. Make no apologies for the name. It has a lot of history. WUSTL owns all.

Yeah, be proud of the school. We don't have to be associated with HYP to be considered prestigious. Unlike those schools in the ivy league. =)

"Danforth" sounds like it's caught between wanting to be Dartmouth or Stanford.

the name wont change the education you get out your time spent there. If they renamed a community college Princeton would it immediately become prestigious? I personally find the name incredibly refreshing from the almost stuck-up and pompous connotations of Ivy-League schools. If we go to WashU we can be the unassuming geniuses out to surprise the world. and once we do, people will come to recognize how awesome the school actually is
