any other asian guys out there, lol? Yeh, this is actually my biggest concern. I got 2290 (800 M, 760 V, 730 W) and I’m 9/650 in my class with a 4.0 unwieghted GPA. Plus I have a decent amount of leadership and ECs. So I think my stats are decent for Wharton. But once again, I am Chinese and I’m a guy. I think we all know how competitive it is for us asians, haha. I really wish right now that I was like a native-american girl.

they try not to make race a detriment to chances, but it hurts...we'll see how much.

i don't know if this is a politically-incorrect Q, but does anyone seen any research, or anything, like psychology or sociologically why Asians and Jews achieve at much higher rates than other races/ethnicities (it's late...is that the right word?)?

Hahaha I'm an asian guy. I'm also applying to wharton. I have a 2240, 4.0 uw, very good leadership, ECs, recs and essays.

I dont think being asian will hurt us too much. From various sources I've talked to, it seems like Wharton makes selections based on merit a lot more than race. Although you will have a definite advantage if you are an URM, as long as you aren't TOO overrepresented you should be fine.

Where are you from?

26e: I doubt it has anything to do with genetics. Probably just the fact that most of us were raised in a very study intensive environment so there are more of us that are overachievers.

i know...that's what makes it sociology. (or is it? :( i don't have electives? do i not understand the definition of soc....that'd be bad)

Hahaha yeah it is sociology. But its not necessarily the entire society that affects them, only their family unit. So i guess its like microsociology.

I'm from jersey, big feeder state

yeah, but the way the family units operate is common to that particular society on a larger scale

yay go AZN males---hahaha...i bet the only reason by NJ has so many of their students applying to penn is because more than half of them are probably azn...lol the AZN sensAZN ;)

there are plenty of asian males here, plenty. my management lecture (of about 70 maybe) has like 6 or 7 asian males, maybe 7 or 8 asian females, and if you count indians, 6 or 7 guys and a couple of girls

true, but the number that apply are probably pretty high as we have talked about.

quote has like 6 or 7 asian males, maybe 7 or 8 asian females
[/quote]
that's it?

15/70, that's a pretty high ratio, 21%.

you know how they have schools and colleges with religious affiliations? they should have that for asians! asain affiliation! talk about a competitive college...dayam

I'm a CHINESE MALE from NEW JERSEY.

Yeah, damn. I'm owned.

BTW to answer your question about "why Asians/Jews are 'model minorities'"... Here:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Model_minority

^ I <3 Wikipedia

Look under "Criticism in the United States."
They give the reasons as: self-selecting immigration, partly genetic explanation, cultural factors in racial disparities, and effects of the stereotype.

If you want more reading (even though it is a very controversial reading, and should be read with a VERY critical eye), I recommend reading "The Bell Curve." If you're going to read that, you should also read the bajillion essays/writings that try to disprove/discredit The Bell Curve's assertions. (Basically, it's very controversial only because of one chapter it contains in which it relates race with IQ. It states that Jews have the highest IQ, then East Asians, then whites, then blacks. [It doesn't really go in to hispanics in depth.])

15 out of 70?

Hahaha, if I get into Wharton, it's going to take some getting used to.

All of my AP classes have about 40 people and I count only around 2-3 white people in the class.

I live in santa clara county, the county in the United States with THE highest asian percentage.

hey what about asian girls applying to wharton ;] same semi-disadvantage?

Actually I heard that like, for un-math/science programs (such as Huntsman), the girl-to-guy ratio is higher than let's say a program like M&T.

So maybe being an Asian female can be deterimental for you... Depends on where you're applying to or what you plan on majoring in I guess.

The only asians who have a disadvantage are those who are the stereotypical "my sat scores will get me into harvard" types

Like i've said many times before, if you want to get into super elites, you have to differentiate yourself from the pack. Being the "stereotypical asian" doesnt help your chances at all.

So stop saying that because youre asian that youre at a disadvantage because the only reason you'd be at a disadvantage is if you resembled the "typical asian" that superelites get thousands upon thousands of applications from

I have asian friends who were sports superstars, which is a very uncommon quality for their subgroup, who have gotten into most of the elite colleges they've applied to. So, in this case, their race actually helped them because they had passions that most in their subgroup did not.
