"I would have a 4.0 if I studied/did homework"

“The detrimental effect of homework’s misuse stems from the second reason for its use. Imagine that same student. As established earlier, doing homework will not significantly improve the student’s understanding of the required material. It would be logical that such a student be exempt from homework that does not help his understanding, but this is not the case. If the student did decide not to do homework, he would not receive a good grade in the class, even if he knew the material more thoroughly than anyone else. However, if he did do homework, he would be wasting his time.”

Exactly. I wish i could have worded it this well. I do homework, except calc homework, only because of the grade. It doesnt help me understand it more, i can listen in class and “get it” without homework.

Purplepotato, you sound like someone i could be friends with. I wish i could have worded my argument that well. I’m going to guess you’re interested in math/ science (computer science or physics), correct?

@ HHSFTW

Yes, I completely agree with you in that respect! I see no further reason to argue then!

d/dx.

@ yalefanboy

I think you are just jealous that you didn’t come up with such a cool signature in the first place!

And as far as it being dorky, well “yalefanboy” ain’t exactly the most “gangsta’” UserName in the world either, buddy. :P

d/dx.

It just occurred to me that I have a gangsta name.

In my perspective, it goes like this:

unintelligent people who do their work > intelligent people who do their work > newborn seapigs > unintelligent people who don’t do work > intelligent people who don’t do work.

Get off your high horse and do your freaking homework like the rest of us. It’s one thing to get lazy at times; we all are. But it’s another to show complete disregard for your classmates and teacher by not even trying, while claiming that you’re really smarter than everyone else (being just too high and mighty to care about petty high school work).

there’s a difference between actually being intelligent and having a good work ethic.

at my school, the valedictorian is not intelligent. that’s the case a lot of the time, as far as i’ve seen. you have the kids who work hard but aren’t really that smart, then you have the lazy kids who are brilliant. sometimes you get that rare combination of both, but it’s truly rare.

At my school, there are people who have high GPAs and care about learning, people who have high GPAs by copying other people’s homework, cheating on tests, etc. The majority of the top 10% of my class does that, which is really annoying and unfair, IMO. There are also people who only care about passing so that they don’t have to go to summer school, and some who don’t care at all and go to summer school. There are also the people who complain about having a low GPA because they don’t study/don’t do homework…that’s their fault, and not anybody else’s, which is why it annoys me a lot when people say that. Some people who aren’t very smart have 4.0s only because they are taking all standard and elective classes. Then there are the people, like me, who try their hardest and get decent grades (As & Bs).

All in all, I agree with this:
unintelligent people who do their work > intelligent people who do their work > newborn seapigs > unintelligent people who don’t do work > intelligent people who don’t do work.

That would be correct. I’m interested in math and most sciences, including CS and physics.

dsfgsgadsgaasdg

^ Why would you put hard-working unintelligent people over hard-working intelligent people?

“unintelligent people who do their work > intelligent people who do their work > newborn seapigs > unintelligent people who don’t do work > intelligent people who don’t do work.”

did you mean: intelligent people who do their work > unintelligent people who do their work > intelligent people who don’t do work > unintelligent people who don’t do work?

No, If an unintelligent person can stay on the level as an intelligent person, then, i respect the unintellectual person more because they don’t have the natural talent but, they have a better work ethic/they work 10 times harder.

It pretty much shows that they are not motivated or hardworking but they want to brag.

@mathemagician1 No, not really.

If I were unintelligent in any subject (which I am, geometry, ugh), I would get very, very discouraged. When someone is unintelligent and does their work, it shows that they have the motivation, work ethic, and responsibility to learn. A naturally intelligent person could start the homework 5 minutes before class and get all of the answers right, but still not be on that same level of work ethic that the unintelligent person is on.

What if the person that is naturally intelligent puts in a work ethic that is greater than that of the unintelligent person?

or if they put in equal amounts of work. then the intelligent person comes out on top, productivity wise.

@mithopeful and mathemagician

Then they would have my utmost respect. However, in most cases I’ve seen, that doesn’t happen. From what I’ve seen at school, the smart kids usually put in minimal effort and get A’s while the unintelligent kids work their butts off and get B’s and C’s.

A lambo will get you women whether it has an engine or not.

No :stuck_out_tongue: And we’re still going to get in the same college. Difference is while you’re studying, I’m gonna be playing CoD.

Seriously, if you value work ethic more than intelligence, you lack in the latter. ANYONE can have a work ethic. Even animals have a “work ethic.” Intelligence, on the other hand, is a constant. Success = Intelligence x Work ethic (roughly). Having the highest intelligence gives you the highest success potential. EVERYONE can up their work ethic for something. Even the laziest students will spend countless hours on a video game, chasing women, etc.

I care only about two types of people, those that do things for the sole intent of impressing college admissions, and those that (what we call grade grubbers at my school) view there grade as more important than helping others (this is taken to the extreme by some people at my school, for example I critiqued my friend’s poem that he wrote for a competition, then I asked him if we could go over the AP chemistry work - “I don’t know how to do it” - comes in the next day with it finished [I finished it too but come on…])
long parenthesis :)

Anyways sometimes it erks me to see a kid that studied 8 hours for something and then pulling a higher grade, but then I’ll think, “It’s not all about me, other people need a grade too”

Also, it’s pretty humorous to see that somebody ranked unintelligent try-hards over intelligent try-hards

Unfortunately at my college I have found this to be just as prevalent as in high school.

In lecture halls of 500 people it is very easy to cheat, and it ****es me off to no end when I see my classmates whispering to each other and looking at papers but I don’t want to tell on them cuz thats gay.

Hopefully as I get into smaller more specialized classes, ppl wont cheat anymore
