It’s an interesting article, you should really check it out, especially if you’re OOS and applying to the UC’s!

“Although critics contend it hurts Californians and reduces political support for the campuses, UC officials insist no California residents are being pushed out to make room for these students.”
I don’t see how that last statement can be true. Imo, it’s too much money to pay to have to deal with all that comes along with a huge public school. But then again, look at what we pay for CA real estate, guess we are all nuts.
Ever heard of the phrase “lying with statistics”? That’s what they’re doing. UCLA expanded enrollment of frosh by about 1,000 kids and gave all the spaces to the new kids. So classes are more crowded, more kids double up in the dorms, etc. but they can say with a straight face “no CA residents are pushed out”.
If you look at the profiles at http://www.admissions.ucla.edu/prospect/adm_fr/frosh_prof.htm you can see they started doing this in 2011. In 2010 they admitted around 4,600 frosh total and 4,000 were from CA. In 2014 (and the numbers are pretty similar for the years 2011 on) they admitted 5,700 frosh total and 4,100 were from CA.
Good info @mikemac, figured it was something like that, marketing is a magical thing :-S
Hmmm so this is making me not really as interested in the UC’s. I’m really liking all these comments!
Even more germane for OOS students is http://www.latimes.com/local/education/la-me-higher-learning-tuition-20150211-story.html which says they are floating the idea of hiking OOS tuition $5K next year
“More than a fifth of all UC freshmen will come from such places as Texas, Washington, China and India and each will pay an additional $23,000 in tuition”
“each will pay an additional $23,000 in tuition”
