I Would Like an Extension

Hi guys,

So I have diabetes and this week has been really bad and I'm pretty sure I'm experiencing neuropathy or something of the sort. It's either my diabetes or I poisoned myself in Orgo lab last week.. not sure at this point but I plan on going ot the doctor tomorrow. Basically my muscles and nerves are all screwy and I'm having trouble standing or holding things and everything's numb.

But that's besides the point. All my health stuff has left me in a bad position because my first Orgo midterm is on Friday but I've barely been able to move all week so I am definitely not prepared. Consequently, I want to ask my professor for an extension... and even though I actually need one I'm TERRIFIED of him and of looking like a lazy tool so I don't know if I should ask.

So my question is: 1) Should I ask or just "do the best I can" and fail?

2) If I ask, is this email appropriate enough:

Hello Professor,

I would like to know if you would be willing to grant me an extension for the exam on Friday. This week I have been experiencing complications related to my diabetes which have debilitated my ability to fully prepare for the exam. At this moment I do not have a doctor's note since I did not consider the problem serious at first but it has gotten worse so I plan on visiting my doctor in the next two days after which he can provide you with a note detailing my difficulties.

I was hoping to make up the exam no later than Monday if possible. Apologies for any inconvenience and I fully understand if you are not able to grant me the extension.

Thank you.

??

That seems like the best you could do at this point, but do you think it would be better ask him this in person?

You’re going to the doctor tomorrow, right? Wait until you’ve had the appointment, and send the email with a note.

Send the email and say that you will follow up with a note.
