I would like some advice on a college major?

Hello, I'm in college right now and having a hard time deciding on a major. Right now I'm majoring in Psychology, but I've decided that I do not want to sit in a room and talk to someone about their feelings and go to school for ten years, since just a degree in Psychology is practically worthless.

My skills: I'm good at art, drawing, painting, English, writing, photography, playing instruments, anything with the arts. I'm not THAT great at art or anything, mainly designing. I draw, but not amazingly, and definitely not like any of the graphic designer's work I've seen. I'm quiet, and don't like talking in front of large groups, I do not like talking on the phone as well.

I'm looking at Cosmetology, Interior Design, Advertising, Marketing, Journalism and Graphic Design and Photography.

Or I would go for the high demand, higher paying careers, even though I would probably fail the classes because I am terrible (and hate) math and science. I would go with something realistic. Such as nursing, some other medical job, dentistry, computer science, engineering, business, etc. But I SUCK at math and science, so those are a no, unless I magically get better at math when I take precalculus fall term. I do however love helping people, but on the other hand do not like talking to them. I am also a slight germ freak and I have emetophobia (fear of vomit).

What would you recommend?

You love helping people but you don’t like talking to them…yeah that’s a problem.

Yeah, lol. I’ve done a lot of community service work, like helping with the homeless, food banks, etc. I don’t like talking to people, but I will if I have to.

You’re a bit like me then, hehehe.

I’m somewhat talented in the arts and I’ve been drawing and playing two instruments my whole life but I just cannot do the more logic-based things like mathematics or science.

While I’m not in college, I do plan to major in Industrial design or possibly design overall.

If you don’t want to pursue a career that doesn’t guarantee a high pay or whatever, I’d say sit it out in class and become a doctor or something. Improve your social skills and at least try.

I used to be behind at math but last year I was the second highest scorer on my Algebra II exams. If you’re not willing to try or go through some hard work, then I really can’t say much for you aside from staying in Psychology.

^Being a doctor is hard work and a competitive field. If the OP is terrible at math and science, this may not be the best option (unless the OP is particularly good at or loves biology). You shouldn’t go to medical school just for the money, especially since it’s a long road (4yrs undergrad + 4yrs medical school + 3+ years of residency) of hard work and serious debt for something the OP is not particular good at or interested in.

The job market is a complex place, and I would recommend that you major in something that you’re good at (or willing to work to be good at) and that you enjoy. Whatever field you go into, you’re going to have to start at the bottom and work your way up to build your career. I think advertising or marketing sound like good fields for you, but I’m not personally in those fields so I don’t know what the job outlook looks like.
