My s just got his SAT score back, and didn't do as well as expected. He made a 35 on ACT and 229 on PSAT. He got a 2150 on this SAT. cr-800, m-670, w-680 with 11 on essay. It was the first time to take it. He made an 80 on the math in the psat, so was really surprised to do poorly on this. Do the schools take the best of each area. It was a surprise to get the 800-cr, and probably wouldn't get it again, if he retakes it. He is looking at Penn, Brown, Pr., uva, and unc. First child, junior, need advice what to do. Thanks.

what is wrong with the 35?

Oh no, I am not thinking the ACT is bad at all. I just don't know about the Ivys and if they will even look at it if the SAT is lower. I am trying to learn from all of you have had experience with this. Thanks

his 2150 does not really equate with a 35. i would suggest having him take it again. i'm sure he can do better given the success of his previous scores. and yes most colleges do take the highest from each section.

if you're not interested in going with the ACT score, i'd retake...yes, the CR will probably go down, but as the year goes on, he'll have more math experience and could definitely improve that score...schools will want balance, too...the drop in CR will likely be less than the gain in math/writing, especially if he did so well on PSATs...but great scores even so, so congrats to your son!

(but if he's planning on just doing liberal arts, getting the math score up isn't as big a deal).

Around here we call it superscoring, but yes-colleges will take the highest subject area scores from multiple admins. The Assistant Director of Admissions commented exactly this on another thread and the vast majority of colleges do likewise. All of the Ivys superscore as far as I know.

Example: 01/07 - CR700, M800, WS650
03/07 - CR800, M640, WS700
Superscore - CR800, M800, WS700

Also, colleges will gladly take the ACT - 35. If you submit SAT and ACT, colleges will only consider the higher score, relatively speaking.

Thank ya'll so much. He came home from school today much more positve and will definitely take it again. I look forward to keeping up with everyone who also have juniors through the next year. Thanks
