I wouldnt want to bore you but...help???

would you give me an idea about whether i am in range or not,i am not a native english speaker,in fact the only i person i speak English to is my father, how are my scores for MIT?(PS;all APs are self study,we dont have that here in my country,no APs no SAT courses,no other courses, everything is up to me:( )

SAT1 1360
760 math
600 verbal
SAT2
Math 2c 800
Math 1c 800
Chemistry 800
Physics 800
Biology E 800
Biology M 800(seperate test dates)
Writing 460 !!(i wont write this)
world history 720

(my writing score was an accident, got really really sick that day,the essay took 35-40 minutes cause of the moans...might retake)
AP
Calc BC 3
Calc BC AB sub score 4
calc AB 5
Physics C E&M 5
Physics C mechanics 5
Physics B 5
Chemistry 5
Biology 5

I ranked in top 1% in my school, which is the top in the country.(actually one of the top 10 schools but high up there, super selective) and i mentored math for 3 years, the school's biology olympiad team for 2 years.conducted independent linear algebra study took test and passed (no credit) (given by a professor individually who liked hekping out enthusiastic math guys)
took college lessons at Boston University, got credit, bio and hist(scholarship for program)!!!!!!not an international applicant, american citizen from birth!!!!!!!first persom in family from both my moms and my dads side,to apply to a big time college.(highest ever are 2 2-year degrees,comparatively,40000 dollar total income).Really want MIT a lot.only scared that my English scores might hurt, curiously enough,if i had a chance to interview with the admission officer himself,he could see well enough, that i am able to grasp english at a standard level, and analyze scientific articles without any trouble.(went through 40 or so PNAS article drafts to fulfill a curiosity of mine)

i am the kind of guy who is nuts over sports, lessons, and music.and i like what i do,mainly math, physics and chemistry.

whatever, justs let me know if you think i am in range, otherwise,i am planning to apply to a local college here.

by the way,i am in HungARY.

THANX.

you seem to be an average MIT applicant + you don't have any research activities or sensible olympics. anyway, you could be admitted... and use the testing option for non-native speakers, your SAT I is not that good.

well, his Math score is good. I'd rather submit that 760/600 than not submit it and instead include a bad TOEFL score. :)

I'd have to say you don't have a good chance.

http://blogs.mit.edu/madmatt/posts/4752.aspx

International looks grim, but what year are you in?

whoa pebbles that totally rhymed! That’s so fine :-)

but to samuel88... it’s really hard to gauge anyone's prediction, and international is always especially competitive. Also, I'd recommended retaking that writing test. Sure world history fulfills the requirement at MIT, but they'll still see the 460 on the score report. Also, if you're applying to other schools they might want the writing.

Yeah, why didn't you take the TOEFL by the way? Are there any standby testing options in your country? If so, do the writing test again!! Nice scores overall.

Good Luck!

Edit: Oh yeah, you're an american citizen. That would definitely be on your plus side.

well i guess i would have to capitalize it
I AM NOT AN INTERNATIONAL!only me mom is foreign.
BUT because i live in a foreign country english is not my mother-tongue!
now can you re-comment please?
and i did qualify for my country's national biology olympiad test,as i wrote,i tutored the biology olympiad team, for our school,i had to place in top 99% in the country, and in a test conducted by the ministry of education last month i placed 7th in the city (equivalent to state).
and my writing test is not of my making,i am sure they will see that,if my english was that bad,i wouldnt understand what wrote in history biology etc...
do you really think i should take toefl?or should i re take sat1.the new version shouldnt have analogies, the part from which almost all of my mistakes were from, awful vocabulary.
all tests were prepared for INDEPENDENTLY.it may seem easy, but with a tough school on your back,it could be a burden.

Re-comment please.
THANX A MILLION,I NEED AN IDEA ABOUT MY CHANCES!

Do you think they would like to know that i took lessons at a local college?(ps:they dont give credits for that here,it was informal, requested from the biology prof)
i am graduating this year, due to my stupidity i skipped a class, which means i had one year less to prep for college admission.

by the way,i applied for sharp, ssp, rsi, ross and a cool internship.(i requested permission for sharp and ssp, since they dont admit graduating students,i had to explain my situation)
and,btw,i am fast typer,will that count :P

thanx again.looking forward to your comments,for a general idea,not a certain decision.(read that blog i did,but i am not an international)

well, with the limited oppurtunities i have here i tried to make the best of it,i hope they manage to see this, thats all i can say.I will just pray and keep up the good faith, maybe god will smile upon me.:)

by the way,i have been playing the piano for 10 years, wona free piano at a music competition for that, though i have had to drop lessons because of heavy course load.no time to spit.

have been playing basketball for 8-9 years.i know its not that important, but i am writing this due to the fact that our school coach is stupid enough to be blinded by the height of players, and thinks if you are a bit short, you are not eligible to play on the team, which is actually odd, since i am,even if not better,as good as the players on the team: I was on the school team on 5th grade, placed 3rd in the semi final nationwide. I hope we will win the in school tournament this year...

sorry if my posts are so lengthy, you have to understand, its kind of hard for me to stop myself, writing so much, when it is so easy:P

they will definately consider the context of your environment. what are you planning to major in?

I don't know - the fact that you're an american citizen would certainly increase your chances.

What I would suggest is redoing the Writing test this january and rush the scores to MIT.. dunno, might work.

Samuel88- I applied to RSI too. What were your stats?

uh...... scroll up?

curiously enough, most of the kids who apply to RSI ask "what are your stats".not that i mind but,RSI takes 75 or sth students, and 1200 apply,so do you think it would really matter what my scores are?i dont think so...i will pass down a piece of advice that was once given to me about RSI,try to reflect your passion, make sure you want to work a lot,and you can prepare a full-scale scientific document.frankly,i hope i make it to ROSS,math is my love,if i ever make it to MIT,i know i will do plenty of research...

if you are in it for the admission, frankly,i hope you dont make it,you will only fill up the place of a passionate young scientist.(no offense, just a comment)

thanx a lot guys for the comments,if you have more,go on,i will TRULY APPRECIATE IT.

pebbles, knowing that you are admitted,i could use your advice.your words on other topics, seem to be near what i think.help would be appreciated.

as i read on another topic on this forum, which i thought was cute,

Lord make me an instrument of your science.(hope that guy makes it:Pthe prayer was cute)

well good luck on rsi then!

also, did you know theres a space after commas and periods? :-P

yeah well, details can be skipped from time to time.(ehe,i always wondered why they have spaces after commas and periods,in fact, i asked my lab instructor at boston u,she told me that it was done for the reader "enjoy the ride"):P
wish you had written good luck on ROSS lol!:)

There are always going to be those who are after the programs for none other than a boost in college admissions. Otherwise, why would so many kids apply for such limited space when there are so many other summer research programs just as worthwhile?

I like the way you think, RSI is wonderful, but isn't all it's cracked up to be. The ambitious kids fighting for the spots make it shockingly difficult to get into, not the quality of the program itself (though it is one of the top). I see the same trend among the "elite" colleges of the country. What makes HYPSM "prestigious" is the crowding effect, not the actual quality of education you receive. A Chicago/Williams/Tufts grad will be just as well-educated as a Harvard grad, but far less inflated. It's what you make of the school/program, not the school/program itself. Therefore, though you stand a shot at MIT (decent one considering your lack of an english background), admission is a toss-up at schools so sought after. Cushion yourself for the fall as well, as there are plenty of other wonderful schools out there just as right for you. Names are for bumper stickers and raised eyebrows; an education is for life. And if you are as motivated and ambitious as you seem to be, you will become something no matter where you go.

well said.

Indeed.

samuel88, I got into MIT EA after years of dreaming about going there. Your circumstances are unusual. And you look like you've succeeded to a large extent, especially considering you come from a poor background and less educated parents. I really think you have a great chance of getting in if you present yourself well.

I know this because I'm you. My math score was a 670. My physics SAT2 score that I had to turn in was a 570. I had one AP exam: Statistics - 3. And despite this I still got in. Why? Well, my parents are a middle school teacher and a janitor and my school sucks academically. I exceeded the expectations placed on me by my peers and by the people who guided my life. So did you. Present yourself well, and you can get in.
