My Background: I am in 8th grade but taking high school classes since grade 6th - took Algebra 1 and scored 99 on NYS Regents. I have completed Geometry Hons, Life Science Hons, Spanish part A. This year I am taking Algebra 2 Hons and PRECALCULUS Hons, Chemistry Hons, 9th Grade English Hons, and Global History 1. I scored 96 and above in all the Regents.
My Question: My parents are considering a private high school which offers both IB Courses ( and IB Diploma) and about 7 to 9 AP courses. This school is not a competitive NYC private school, but it’s location is close to our home. I want to take IB Courses so I can get IB Diploma by taking at least 4 HL Level IB Courses. I also want to be a National AP scholar in my Junior year - mathematics and science APs can help me come close to my goal. Do you think all this effort will help me get admission in any of the top 10 colleges. I will most likely major in engineering with a minor in applied mathematics
Please help me by giving me your input. I will appreciate it very much. Thank you. .
Yikes, you are in 8th grade and posting after midnight, worrying about college admissions? As a mom, go to bed. As a random poster, it is possible to do IB and AP classes at the same time but it depends on your school scheduling. My D got her IB diploma and had 7 AP classes as well. But it is definitely school specific. Check with the HS counseling Dept, and take a chill pill. You are WAY to young to be worrying about these things.
You may be too advanced in math for the IB diploma math to be suitable for you, since the higher level math taken in senior year is basically single variable calculus plus a few extra topics, which you should be far beyond by then.
Since you are also advanced in other subjects, you may find the IB diploma program with its rigid sequencing and scheduling to be limiting, especially if some subjects are offered only at the standard level.
You may want to instead investigate whether your high school has any coordination with a local college for its students to take college courses while enrolled in high school. As advanced as you are, you will probably want to take math beyond single variable calculus while in high school, after completing single variable calculus (AP calculus BC) in 9th grade. You may also be interested in other college courses that are beyond AP level while in high school.
IB courses have a reputation of being huge amounts of work, so they may be useful (but not necessarily pleasant) if you need practice with time management and related issues.
IB Pure Math HL goes well beyond Calculus BC but that’s be in the 12th grade and you’re ready to take Calculus in the 9th. What would you do during 10th and 11th grade?
Is there a school that would let you do CollegeNow?
Man you are ahead of the game! I think you should establish your interests in mathematics by doing college level math. You will definitely stand out if they see how far you took your math courses
