IB Diploma Credit

So on the UC Berkeley website, it said that if students are doing the IB Diplomma program as a whole, then they will receive 20 credits if they receive a score of 30 or above.

My question is, where are these credits used for??? Do they go towards the electives??? Is it a maximum of 20 credits or is it 20 credits for anybody who satisfied the condition???

Lol, every time I see someone use multiple question marks in a single sentence a picture of a 5 year old hyperventilating kid with bulging eyes and a giant mouth appears.

just like these kids–

Lol

@dragoon998: No need to post just for the sake of posting. But LOL!!!

Come on guys, I’m sure many people have taken the IB Diploma before???

with the exception of a few awesome people like ubcalumni and upmagic on CC, people in general aren’t helpful at all.

There are posts that have been viewed over 1000 times and yet only 10 posts that suggest somewhat useless advice.

It’s not that people don’t know, it’s just the mentality of competition in highly rated schools. Other people want to get the upper hand and therefore will not offer useful advice.

It’s better just to google it yourself than wasting time and posting on here. Though sometimes people do chime in…but that’s once in a blue moon.

(I never took IB so i don’t know sorry :frowning: )

So the 20 units count towards your graduation, like general credits, which means you only need to fulfill 100 credits at Berkeley to graduate (but most people do more). And you just get 20 credits if you get above a 30.

I’ll answer your question. I have completed the IB diploma program at my high school and have received a score of 30+.

They’re like 20 units of (useless) electives. Really, there’s not that much gain for them except they might bump you up for Telebears registration because that’s based on what standing you have in Cal. I think when I entered Cal, combined with my AP/IB credits, I entered with ~70 units (junior standing, so my registration appointment was really early, usually on the first day). The number of people who have done IB is relatively small, compared to students who have completed the AP program.

Wow dragoon, if you’re not the pot calling the kettle black.

Yea, they’re just extra units that help contribute to your unit total. You’ll still have to satisfy the whole breadth of your major but If you finish it early, you can possibly graduate earlier. This is similar to transferring juniors who can transfer a max of 70 units.

It honestly depends what you’re majoring in. I’m majoring in economics, so I got credit for Econ I, Calc 1A/IB, as well as my R1A and r1B requirement (like a total of 18 units) I know people who’ve gotten both less and more. So, if you feel like you’re not earning enough credits, don’t worry, you’re not the only one. I took IB, and speaking from an L&S point of view, my credits would have been the same if I had taken the equivalent AP classes. Either way, we’re all stuck taking breadth classes in L&S…

As noted above, depending on which IB HL subjects you got high enough scores in, you may have subject credit for some courses. Check your intended major department and division (L&S, Engineering, etc.).

@LookitsPriya: Yeah but how did you get only 18 credits. Berkeley states that if you get your diploma with 30 or above, then you get 20 credits right??? This is my confusion. And what if you don’t do well enough in your HL subjects to get specific subject credit but still get your diploma with a score of 30 or above. Then you still get 20 credits right???

as long as you get 30+ you get 20 blank credits that allow you to graduate just by taking 100 units (for a single major) as opposed to 120.

However, to place out of major/course requirements you need to take specific HLs in IB.

e.g. 36pts HL Math, Chemistry Physics would place you out of Math1A and maybe 1B depending on your college and give you 20 blank credits

and 36pts in HL Geography, Music, Chemistry would place you out of nothing and give you 20 blank credits.

Thank You for clearing that up Kazakia… I’m happy that I’m going to be getting 20 credits!!! :)
