Anyone in the IB program have to do an extended essay over the summer? What are your topics? What have you done so far?

I've already graduated, but i did anthropology. My title was something along the lines of "The effect of the changing and diverse population in the United States on the advertising industry." It was interesting in some parts, but not much. I just didn't want my topic to be about history like everyone else was. My essay came out to be 13 pages long and 3,494 words. Have fun! [haha...]

Hah, yeah, history seems to be the default. I'm convinced there are only three interesting topics at my school, two of them completely unconventional since the subjects aren't taught. My friend's is in music (he's a pianist), I can't remember the exact title, but he's comparing Liszt's and Rachmaninoff's variations on a theme by Paganini as an example of their romanticism.
Mine's in philosophy (also not taught), and I'm not sure about the title, but is about Pseudo-Dionysius's negative theology.
The third is a comparison between a few yearly greatest american short story books, comparing the characteristics they all share and the evolving short story aesthetic.

Hey, I don't have to do it yet! W00t!

I think if you do history you like automatically get a C. I've been looking at some people's and everyone predicted an A or a B, but they got a C or a D and for the most part they did history or english.

I plan on doing economics or psychology.

I did biology for my topic last summer (Niche Partitioning in Wood Warblers in NC), and I got a B. I spent several weeks in the field doing research and then wrote up my findings. I almost went over the 4,000 word limit, so I added a lot of appendices. :)

I did English and got a C, lol, didn't quite no I was doomed from the start! ;)

A friend of mine did math with a focus on fractals, complete with programs and other research, and still got a C.

Good luck to all of you IB'ers!

Quitejaded - wait, so when do you do it? It would be painful to write the thing during senior year.

Geminihop - what was your topic?

Warblerrule - what kind of research did you do? (absolutely clueless about your topic, but wondering what research consists of)

That's not entirely true about either History or English, I have a friend who apparently wrote a very impressive ee on The Bay of Pigs that taught our history teacher (a Brit, even) something new.
How much did you meet with your advisor? Was s/he helpful?

Competition occurs when two or more species fight for the same resources; usually only one species survives/thrives. A researcher in Maine noticed that five warblers fed on the same food in the same habitat. After observing the birds, he realized that each species fed in a different part of the tree, eliminating competition ("niche partitioning"). There are only three warbler species in NC, so their feeding niches should expand ("competitive release"). I observed warblers in NC for several weeks and recorded their feeding habits/locations. No competitive release occurred, though.

I did a POS (IMO) EE in history....was expecting a C/D but ended up with an A somehow. It was only 2900 words, too. Maybe because the topic was unique or something I ended up with an awesome score....

Of course it's not entirely true about either English or History, I was being cheeky ;)

Anyway, my topic was probably what lowered my score because it was only borderline English. It was on the representation of Ethel Rosenberg in literature. I had originally intended to do the paper in history, but my subject changed while I wrote my paper over the summer. It was my term paper for a women's studies class I took at Harvard (got a B+ on paper, A- in class). I probably could have made it better as a historical subject, I had primary sources of the Rosenberg sons, but I was passionate about the literature. Plus, I just wanted the EE to be done!

Congrats, towerpumpkin, on the A!

Our entire IB class wrote their essays during the last few months they were due with the exception of maybe 2 or 3 people. We're such great procrastinators :) ...well nevermind, I guess I'll have to see our scores before I can say that. :P

Oh yeah, my paper went to Brazil to get graded, hehe.

hey, what's POS (IMO)? The thing you did for your EE.

The IB seniors of '05 ALL procrastinated on their papers, and so now our class ('06) has to write them this summer, too. I haven't started writing yet, but I'm nearly done with my research. My topic needs some work, too... I've been reading John Steinbeck's major works (6 novels, so far) and some biographies, and I'm planning to write an expository paper on his views of the American dream, especially as represented by California or the West. I'm also going to discuss the reasons in Steinbeck's own life for California's significance.

quitejaded, i think it's "piece of ****" (In my opinion). haha.

... let me know if i'm wrong, though.

bumpity hump hump

Yeah...thats what I meant...
