I've asked a couple friends at la about this.. they told me that basically, elective credit just gives you "sophmore standing" so you COULD potentially graduate earlier by meeting the minimum 180 credit requirement (of ECP) in less than four years.

HOWEVER, sometimes if you choose to pursue a major/minor combo, chances are you're not going to want to use the 30 elective credits, in order to save room for the credit you Do need (UCLA has a minimum credit requirement, as well as a max). In that case, those people have to petition to get those extraneous elective credits OFF their transcripts.
So basically, its a wash (it will be for me at least).

And on the AP and IB credit pages, they note:
"AP examinations, IB examinations, and college courses taken prior to or after enrolling at UCLA may be duplicative. In these cases we will award credit for only one."

On the AP page, but not the IB page, it notes:
"AP units will not count against the allowable unit maximum
for the Bachelor's degree."

Uh... my previous post was actually a response to pizzaquick.

What I've heard is that IB credits can be used for elective credit to potentially help you graduate earlier. For example, if your GEs + major classes don't add up to 180 units, those elective units might come in handy.

woops. yeah the IB credit can't be used in the ECP amount. So that means the 180 ECP credits must be taken with actual classes, and then you meet the remainder with elective credit. I don't know what my friend was talking about specifically regarding her large major/minor combo, but I do know that she wants to petition to remove the 30 IB diploma credits from her transcript...

If ECP states the minimum 180 requirement must be fulfilled with UCLA courses, how can the 30 IB elective credits be applied to that quota? I think they're just used as an addendum, just in case you need to maybe prevent graduating later. I doubt they facilitate early graduation (maybe they did before 2001 when ECP was introduced) unless you maybe fulfill all your major/Ge requirements before your 4th year at ucla, and you have nothing left but elective credit to satisfy anyways. I really don't see how IB would help with early graduation but, again, I'm no expert.
