Hello,
I know that a diploma candid for IB must have 3 HL courses and 3 SL courses, and I also heard that some colleges would like you to take as many HL courses as you can. Is this true? or is the number of HL courses you can take restricted?

You can't take as many as you want. The max is 4 HLs, and that's not easy. Most schools only give credit for higher levels, so yeah. However, some schools, like the UCs give blanket credit for the diploma. BTW, IB is freaking nectar of life.

Thanks for your advise.... I was thinking of Taking IB English HL... but it looks so difficult.. so thinking of dropping it. . ..

IB HL english is NOT difficult. well, the exam isn't at least. it's comparable to the AP english test in difficulty, if not easier!

you can only take either 3 or 4 HL courses, as mandated under IB DIPLOMA rules. 4 if obviously better if you can handle it, but there's really no significant difference between 3 or 4 when it comes to admissions. it's not like all the kids who have 4 HL's get admitted over those with 3... and perhaps some kids with HL's might not do as well in terms of GPA?

another thing to take into consideration is that for some colleges, if you can't score over a certain number of points or if you don't score enough to receive the diploma, then college credit is only granted to passed HL exams and nothing is earned from your SL results.

Uuuhhh, I dont know what kind of student KFC is, but IB English is def one of the harder tests for kids at my school. They tell us that we are one of the best scoring IB schools in North America, we consistently outperform the world, like in anthro. We get 7's in a lot of the exams, but not really in English. I consider a 6 or a 7 a good score, and english HL is the only one that our school has an avg of like 5.6 on. So I dunno. If its not your first language its def. not going to be lemon peezy.

And its usually like 30+ points for the college cut off for blanket points.

I think when u look at the syllabus, English is the most easiest subject to do as a HL in comparison to its SL course. In higher level, sure you are expected to write at a higher standard, but you get 2hrs to write a commentary whereas SL only get 1.5! and at my school higherlevel kids get 7 lessons per cycles, standard only 4...and we do the same books, it's not like for HL you take an extra exam!

having said that, I think English is a difficult subject to score well on. my school is pretty good in IB too but when u look at the high scorers, it's always English that they can't get a 7 on! I think because English is so subjective it depends a bit on luck ... Perhaps it's not so much how hard it is but just im clueless on how to score well on it....

i guess take it if you want to risk it;)

In terms of HL's, I'm not really sure it's worth it to do four, unless you really want the credit in that class. I highly doubt colleges want or expect you to do four.

English HL DOES have some extra books/texts to study. Like a fourth text for the exam. That said, a subjective subject such as English, Theater Arts, Visual Arts...well, to score high is so hard. It's not standardized with an answer sheet like bio and chem.

We have some people taking 7 IB subjects, 3 of them at HL. Some taking 6 subjects, 4 of them at HL. Talk to some of your teachers who'd have an idea how much you can handle in terms of the workload. At some schools, with the exception of Math, you don't have to choose which are your Highers until the end of the junior year.

yo i'm a senior and i'm taking English HL...all i gotta say is...your teacher might be an @sshole...cuz mine sure is :( ... ummm...and its madd reading

oh btw does the UC's really give alot of credibility to IB diploma candidates? i did not know that

My teacher isn't an ******* but, my Goodness, he goes off on tangents sooo often we didn't fully finish Hamlet for the Orals! Nor did we fully finish the requirement about reading a non-fiction work. grin Thank goodness we weren't examined on that.

Hmmm...about UC's you might want to go to the IBO site for university recognition.

Good luck with it!

your teacher isnt a jerk???? i truly envy u

Which other Highers are you taking? (Or is it suppose to be "What other Highers are you taking?" Heh, how does that go for obsession with SAT grammar nitpicking??)

Glass-Box: English is one of the easier subjects to switch btwn HL and SL. Maybe you should make your mind up by the time you have to write your World Lit 2 in HL class.

Does your school allow you to do 4 HLs though? I know a lot of schools don't and say if you're doing diploma you can only do 3.

I'm doing 4 HLs as a diploma candidate.... it's killing me and I wish I did 3... But then it depends on the teacher too

Our school allows four HL's with at the discretion of the subject teachers and IB Coordinators. They gotta approve. Most schools don't even talk about offering 4. At all the high schools I've been to, it's the perogative and initiative of the student to approach the IB Coordinator about taking 4 Highers.

I'm taking four Highers (Bio, Chem, Eng, History European), as are a few other people. Which 4 are you taking, snerry?

my 4: English, Music, Economics, French

look here, I asked previously which HLs people were taking...

actually you can take more than 4 if your school allows you to take extra certificates outside of your diploma. but only 4 can count toward your diploma and you have to decide which 4 way before the exam

i'm taking english, chemistry, and history

I'm doing four HL's. Physics, Chemistry, History, and English. In all honesty, I wish I had chosen to do three. Physics is killing me. I truly don't think IB English is that bad, but then I adore my teacher.

as was mentioned, you can take a subject outside your Diploma as an HL, but you have to decide which 6 subjects are going to count toward your Diploma fairly early in Senior year. This is pretty rare though because of the way IB works and having to take all the tests Jr/Sr year. I, and a couple other people out of the 35 at my school, had a 7th exam.

I believe you can take 5 HLs, but you have to have a very good reason and get permission directly from IBO. Generally, you can't take more than 4.

As for English specifically, different subjects are harder for different people. I got a 4, and I wrote 1 world lit paper that only had 1 quote =P, and my other world lit was quite subpar.

/May '04

There're a couple people in my grade this year taking 5 high levels and I'm pretty sure they didn't go through the hassle of contacting the IBO (unless of course, the teachers did it for them)
