Ok im in IB and ive tried several times but the school wont allow me to take Calculus AP if im in IB i have to take Math SL.

My problem is, I dont know the difference between the two, and I know selective(ivy) colleges want to see calculus on your resume. Would it hurt my app if i never took calculus, but math sl instead?

I've taken IB Math SL and AP Calc BC and none of the colleges that I applied to give any kind of credit for the SL so it's not regarded too highly. Maybe you can take the AP Calc through an on-line course. Won't your school let you double up on math? Also, talk directly to the math dept. at each of the schools you are considering. They'll be really candid with you.

Should I double up? They did say that but i dont know it might be too hard, but if its worth it and it will increase my chances of getting into a selective college i will most definitely do it.

Why can't you take Math IBS at least? It's calculus based. If your college won't give admission for it, maybe you can take their placement exam. The syllabus should be more or less complete (you might have to study a bit over the summer).

If you cannot take Math IBS due to scheduling issues, you may be able to manage two classes SL/AP, but you must be studious and dedicated.

Get an AP calculus study guide, and self study. No ivies, and few other top tier schools take SL credit, it's worth it to atleast use the stuff you learned in IB Math and apply it to the AP calc AB exam.

You won't get college credit for Math SL, but you won't get credit for AB calc at many top schools either. From what I've seen in my school, taking SL Math won't hurt you, especially if its the highest IB math offered at your school. They look at you in the context of your program. My school didn't offer HL math until this year, and we've had many IB grads go to top schools (In the class of 20 last year, there was a yale and a princeton)

S is taking SL Math Studies next year and AB Calc (as one class, but is taking both exams). We've been told that between what they do in IB and what they cover for AB Calc, it's enough to do well on both.

Math Studies is like a review of algebra, geometry, and algebra II with a little bit of differential calc mixed in at the end of 4th quarter. I'm taking the class right now. At my school, freshmen who place out of geometry but are deemed unprepared for algebra II are forced into Math Studies, and that's why I'm taking it.

I am currently in IB Math SL and I just took the AP Calc AB exam and the IB Math SL exam. Now, I'm not sure how it works at your school but at my school the IB Math SL is a 2 year course. The first year focuses on the IB curriculum/precalculus stuff while the second year is pretty much AP Calc AB. There is a calculus portion to the IB Maths SL so our teacher just pretty much taught us AP Calc AB. If you will be a junior when you take Math SL then take AP Calc BC Senior year but if this will be your last year then I would say get a calculus book and the AP syllabus and do a chapter each month and then at the end of the year take the AP Calc. It's okay to focus more on the Calc then you IB course becasue Maths SL exam is SUPER; you don't really need to know anything for it because you get a formula packet just know vectors matrices and probability and simple math skills and you'll be fine for that exam. AP Calc is more involved you need to UNDERSTAND it so possibly get with the AP Calc teacher at your school for some tutoring once or twice a month? Hope this helps
