Im currently taking math sl but struggling very very much. I want to go into medicine once I graduate but if I keep taking sl it will drop my gpa and my overall predicted score. Does it really matter which math i take?
I’m taking math studies right now and it’s not really an issue. If you feel it will impact your GPA, switch into it. I got accepted into the colleges I’ve applied so far.
No. SL is SL, and taking Math Studies won’t hurt you. It’s also pretty interesting!
http://www.ibo.org/en/programmes/diploma-programme/curriculum/mathematics/mathematics/ suggests that IB Math Studies SL will attract students who will not take subsequent math courses.
Note that many medical schools require calculus among their pre-med requirements, and some schools’ physics courses for pre-meds require calculus. So you should check whether IB Math Studies SL is suitable for a student who will take calculus in the future.
^it is. It includes precalculus and does a thorough job over 2 years, along with various math applications to the real world or to other fields (such as art/geometry or social science/stats). Granted, not many Math Studies students will choose to take Calculus in college, but if need be, they can.
It’s just not calculus (in either an extended or accelerated version, which are the other two choices).
Although taking calc in HS will help a premed taking calc in college, there’s no obligation to do so and a large number of students start college without calculus, including among prospective premeds.
