Im a sophomore and aspiring to go to NYU as a liberal arts major. Im taking Precalculus Honors right now and just barely scraped a B. Math has never been my favorite subject, however for Geometry I had an A+ which i took in 8th grade, and alg 2 i got an B+. I want to go Ivy League or NYU, and I don't know if IB Math Studies will be looked down upon. The thing is I really don't know if I can handle Calculus AP with IB math sl when I have 3 other HLs and History and Bio are both known to be extremely rigorous courses at my school. yet at the same time i think it would be a waste of my time in precal hnrs since u don't even need to have taken alg 2 hnrs to get into math studies. pls helpme decide thanks. or just give advice. and for NYU what r the general requirements? do colleges look down on u if u dont take calculus?

Just a heads up, your counselors have to fill out a form regarding the difficulty of your courseload, and if it’s anything short of “most difficult” it doesn’t look good. That being said, an A in IB Math Studies is better than a B in IB Math HL. That being said, it’s not that hard. I took HL courses in Math, Bio, History and English. Plus, it’s very useful to have calculus going intto college. If you’re not going to take it this year, then take it next. Easy A when you come in.

I also have a question, I am from Sarajevo capital city of Bosnia and Herzegovina, and I am really confused… Today we had a presentation about IB programme, because I already took two years of MYP - Middle Years Programme and now we have to choose our subjects on IB, however I am not that good in math as in other subjects, and my question is do you know is math studies recognized in New York University-NYU or not? Should I take math in SL or I can take math studies?

I’m currently a senior in SL Math and was accepted to NYU’s Core Program for Fall 2013. I think, for NYU, the best option would be SL Math unless you really are poor in mathematics. Whether you take SL Math or SL Math Studies, NYU will not give you college credit because it is only a SL class. NYU’s policy on college credit is to only award credit for HL classes that you receive a 6 or 7. But for the admission process, it would probably look best to be in SL Math even though I know of students who have been accepted that took SL Math Studies.

Thank you very much! Furthermore, is it true that nowdays it is better to get A in Math Studies than B in Math SL? I know that few years ago this is true, but nowadays IB changed a lot

@ninamu,

Hi, I recently got admitted to NYU CAS. I took IB Math Studies and scored a 6 (out of 7). Ive heard that in america, as long as you do some sort of IB Math, they are on the same caliber, except HL Math.

What I mean is that even though HL>Studies by far, they will not hold it against you unless you are looking into doing Mathematics or Engineering of any sort
